I am going to request a meeting for my 10 year old with hypotonia (sometimes called mild CP) and hypermobility. He is fatigued and cannot keep up with the handwriting (school is letting him keyboard some. Does anyone have an example of a 504 plan or IEP dealing with such problems or have any resources to point me toward?
Thanks,
Rebecca

I can only speak for how things work in our area, procedures are different in every school. For our district, a 504 plan would cover what you are looking for. We must first request an evalution (Occupational Therapy in your sons case). If the OT feels that the disability effects the students abilty to perform classwork or activities, they will recommend services. OT in school is different than OT as medical based OT, so dont be surprised. It sounds like you are just looking for official accomodations/consultation, that request should be simple. You should also be able to give your input, to state why you feel accomodations are needed as well.
You can ask for SDI's (specially designed instruction); shortened writing assignments, extra time, voice recorder instead of taking notes, scribe for writing tasks (someone to copy what your son says for legthy assignments), computer or typed options for assignments, copies of notes provided, frequent breaks.
Search for fine motor accomodations online and you will find alot of ideas.
I hope this was a little help, its hard to give good info since every school runs their 504 plans so different (I work in 4 districts each with a different process).
Good Luck,

Do you have a local CP organization? They may be able to help you.
Second of all, I have mild hypotonia. I was forced to write manually. It was very difficult for me. Instead of producing content, I had to concentrate all my energy on forming those letters! Arughhh!!!! I now mostly type everything. It's so much easier, and as a matter of fact I am actually working on a memoir! (over 200 pages so far! YEAH!!!!)
Concentrate on content............Have him learn to sign his name, but otherwise keep on typing. There's really no reason for a hypotonic kid to have to learn to manually write....or if he does, ignore cursive (except for his signature)
