View Full Version : TN Pain is now daily becoming more constant

It is now the 11th of January here. It's 6:20 am. I am very scared. I live alone and my TN this year is getting worse and worse on a daily basis.

I spent the turn of the New Year in the ED. Two days later I was back again.

Since then I've had attacks nearly daily, and have lost count of how many times this monster has attacked me.

Nine out of the past 11 days, I'm getting very bad attacks. They're lasting several hours at a time.

The ED gave me an anti-inflammatory that "worked" it took all the pain away, but after it wore off, the pain crept back in again.

The ED told me this "Toradol" wasn't available outside the hospital. My GP has since provided a script for both the tablets and ampoules. In the last 30 hours, I've had to take 6 of the 10mg oral tablets. Along with 100mg Tegretol, 200mg Tegretol XR & a 0.5 Xanax every 4.5 hours. The relief may last 2 hours, but then it comes back with intensifying pain.

I don't know what to do with the ampoules. They're encased in solid glass, I don't have any needles and even if I did, I cannot for the life of me, imagine sticking a needle in myself, in my upper arm.. So they sit in the fridge..

If I phone the paramedics, they won't just use my inj, they still have to take me to hospital.

I'm scared because it's never been this bad before. I feel like the attacks now will not go away, the are much more painful than ever before and ..

Yesterday, the pain attacks came and went to way past double even triple my bearable levels and when I took my meds, delayed reactions as usual from them, but the attacks were back within 2 hours, giving me only a half hour of relief here and there. Relief as in, the pain would drop back below a 10. Maybe to 8/10.

I knew last night would be bad - it was. I managed to doze off by 2 am and was woken at 4:05 am. This time, BOTH sides of my face were in tortuous agony. I took the pills and by 5:30 am the pain went back to a 2. I still couldn't sleep. It's 6:35 am now. The pain is returning. It's a 10/10 now and climbing!!!

It has still returned on both sides of my face. This should be impossible - everyone (medically) and striking back, say this is not possible, it's only 1 side at a time.

Putting up with one side is bad enough. My face is in that much pain now, my neck glands have swollen up in response to pain in my face, while swollen they are painful. This serves only to make the pain in my face twice as bad..

I am now feeling pain in not only my face, but my neck & breastbone, so I am even more petrified now that something else is happening to me. I cannot touch even briefly, any part of my face! That spikes the pain level. Please help me!

I don't know what to do. Should I phone the paramedics again??

Thanks for reading ~ Kerry

I'm so sorry that you are at this point !

My daughter Lauren had pain on both sides but when they did the MVD they did the right side because the pain started on the right. I'm thinking that the pain radiates to the other side.

From what I've read the electrical currents pass from one to the other and can spread over to the left side.

Can you have surgery? What are your options?

I wish there was something I could do for you !

Sending prayers for some relief !!

Kerry,
I'll ask you a hypothetical question. If you were seeing a friend of yours experiencing the same amount of pain and agony as you are now, and in the same situation, what would you have them to do?

I read in "Striking Back" about phenytoin. I have not tried it yet, but my doctor put a note in my chart to hook me up to a fosphenytoin drip the next time I ended up in the ER. Apparently this will stop the TN pain. While they are administering it (via saline IV, I think), you just need to be hooked up to a heart monitor. You may be able to get this done in the ER without being admitted.

You, as a person, have the right to have your pain treated. You would not let a pet or animal suffer like this, so in my own humble little opinion, neither should you.

While you decide your next step, remember to breathe. Deep breaths, long and slow. Try not to panic, try to open your chest muscles and let them stretch, and work on lengthening any muscles that your fear may been encouraging to spasm.

I have to sign off and go to bed, sweetheart. I hope that you make the best decision for yourself and your care. My last really bad incident, I let it get really bad at home, and I never should have let it get that far. I decided then that when I am no longer able to manage the pain with what is available to me, it is time to go to the doctor, and let the professionals handle it.

Hugs, across the Pacific,
Lily

If I lived by you I would drive you to the ER myself and stay all night and the next day and then take you home when you were relaxed and peaceful again....when ever that was. That is what I'd like to do for you but it is not possible. So what I suggest is getting to the hospital and getting the drip Lily suggested. I had that the first night and it *will* help. Also they can coach you on taking the ampules and doing what you need to do with them. At this point I would think you would do it if you really felt comfortable with the process. My husband has an epi pen for allergy/swelling and it came with a tester shot that teaches you how to give it. Can you ask for something like that? You're right, them just sitting in your fridge is not what you need right now. You need it in your system.

I will be thinking of you. Praying you are safe.
Hugs,
Stephanie

Kerry, I really feel for you, but I think you need to go back to your doctor and try some different meds. Your pain doesn't sound like its being controlled on your current dose. Hugs, Ellena

Hi Kerry,

I am so sorry that you have to cope with all this pain. It seems to me that your pain is out of control.
My neurologist promised me that should it ever come to this, I could be admitted and have a phenytoin drip.
Supposedly this will stop the pain or bring it down to a more bearable level. However this is not a long term solution of course.

I think that while you are in agony you will not be able to make any decisions nor should you attempt to do so.

But once it is under control in some way, it might help to talk to your neurologist and discuss your options.

I do hope that these attacks stop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let us know how you are doing.

take care,

Anne
