my new machine came with norton, but i have not yet installed it. this is a trial i assume, have not paid them any money. norton scares me.
that jump in user ratings from a 7/10 to a 4/10 is pretty telling.
every time i boot up it asks me if i want to install it now. i always close the window.
is there a way to get rid of this message?
what else is it doing?

how weird it is in the add/remove but very small, only 7 meg oh that is only part of it. how can it be installed if i haven't installed it? how come it keeps asking me to install it if it is already installed? it says it was last used on 7/29/2006, which is probably the date i put the new computer up. yes it was.
it is also on the start menu.
so how come it wants to be installed? what is the safe thing to do here?

Yeah, I was pretty peeved when I chucked the Norton AV 2007 installation disk into the computer and then it came up with the screen saying it was incompatible with various programs. Meh!
There's no doubt you need AntiVirus and a Firewall but no way I'm going to let Norton tell me which one I should be using. Definitely not theirs anyway! It made a pretty yellow frisbee. :)
I'd had issues with MacAfee during the previous year - it was incompatible with something or other so that got ditched earlier in the year as well.
I'd been through Zonealarm h*ll (http://blogamania.blogspot.com/2006/07/zpydll-zonealarm-zpydll-available-here.html) with one of their releases although I'd finally got it running but my confidence in that product was severely shaken.
I eventually went for Trend (http://www.trendmicro.com). Problem free. And it found a keylogger on my son's computer that Norton hadn't seen.

So mcfox, what is Trend? Is it a firewall virus protector? I am sick of relying on Norton. What is a good and reliable substitute these days? Anyone have any advice on this troublesome but important issue?
mcfox

Trend is anti virus, antispyware, anti malware and firewall all rolled into one - and you can use it on three computers which is helpful.

I read somewhere someone was able to sneak Zonealarm back onto thier computer AFTER INSTALLING 2007. (It didnt detect it)

Give this a read on how to disable the worm protection in NAS 2007 to get ZoneAlarm to work.

Note:
As a GENERAL RULE: You should have have one firewall and one anti-virus program running/operating on your computer without conflict, more then one of each will cause/create conflicts.
Cheers:)

if it was installed when i bought the computer but needs more installation, is it going to interfer with other stuff? i have AVG and AdAware up and running and no body is complaining.
There's no doubt you need AntiVirus and a Firewall but no way I'm going to let Norton tell me which one I should be using. Definitely not theirs anyway! It made a pretty yellow frisbee. :)
does XP have a firewall? do i need to install it? what firewall do you recommend?
I'd had issues with MacAfee during the previous year - it was incompatible with something or other so that got ditched earlier in the year as well.
i had a MacAfee subscription on the old computer. it could not install for a year, and the firewall did vvery strange things. i can't convince them to cancel my subscription.
I eventually went for Trend (http://www.trendmicro.com). Problem free. And it found a keylogger on my son's computer that Norton hadn't seen.
is this expensive? do you recommend it over AVG?
do you get the feeling i was sitting here wishing you would get here so that i could ask you a million questions?

Annie, I would leave your computer just as it is. :)
I'm sure Dorry and ZS have you configured and set up just fine. :)
My reason for starting this thread was to stop anyone else wasting their money on a product that will only work if you remove several others beforehand.
I was mighty p****'d when I got home with the Norton Antivirus 2007 disk from the computer shoppe only to find it wouldn't work with other programs already installed, and for which I'd already paid good money. Meh!

there were forum issues. i got this computer just after the braintalk went down. when the new psych central forum went up dorry and ZS spent a lot of time getting rid of flash for me. immediately everytime i went to yahoo computer froze, mouse, keyboard, had to turn off at on/off button. apparently a problem with yahoo at the same time. after two days tho the whole problem went away and has not resurfaced.
then i was not able to focus well enough for a week or so to finish dorry's suggestions. then dorry left. then braintalk started up again. and i came back home. to no dorry. and i am afraid to do stuff without someone to cry to.

something from norton is loading and asking me if i want to install it. every morning i have to exit this message. one mouse click but still wish i could get rid of it, plus i don't understand why it is there in the first place.
plus norton basically scares me.

That's what's known as a nag-screen. The idea of it is you get so sick of seeing it that you just install it to get rid of the nag screen.
Try looking in Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
(hit the big 'Start' button in the bottom left of your screen - you will see Control Panel link in that menu)
look for anything that says 'Norton' or 'Symantec'

i have
LiveUpdate 2.7 (Symantec Corporation) Size 7.23 MB Used rarely Last used on 5/6/2006
Norton Internet Security 2006 (Symantec Corporation)size 64.48 MB Used rarely last used on 7/29/06
if they are already installed how come i am getting a nag screen to install them? can i safely uninstall?

I should think it would be safe to uninstall them. I am assuming my (somewhat dodgy) memory is correct in thinking you have AVG installed as antivirus and Zonealarm firewall?

I have Norton Internet Security 2006 (NIS) installed in my computer. It had me uninstall SpyBot before I could install NIS. This did not happen with the 2005 version.
I find that NIS 2006 is a resource hog. It has two icons on my task bar eating my memory.
I would not run a system without a virus program, and a firewall.

Hello All
I dont use NIS, NAV or Mcafee products or toolbars, my security programs are all safe and tested freeware (no malware included). I do the research and testing of the programs I use and recommend and this how I came about with this info about NIS and the incompatibility of other spyware removal/firewall and AV programs.
Give this a read: Spybot-S&D (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/news/2006-09-29.html)

i have
cleaned the cache
run AVG
downloaded and run SpyBot. this is another story for another thread. but i had besides tracking cookies a trojan TagASaurus. spybot also complained that the WindowsSecurityCenter was disabled.
run AdAware, nothing but tracking cookies
done a cold boot.
and remembered that the reason that i disabled the windows firewall is because my dialup told me to in order to use their service.
so i am now going to disconnect, close down everything, and turn on the windows firewall. if you never hear from me again you will know that i am signing up for a new ISP.
*******************
windows firewall turned on.
there is a Symantec LiveUpdate icon in my control panel.
the SecurityCenter icon opens to a screen telling me that The Security Center is currently unavailable because the "Security Center" service has not started or was stopped. Please close this window, restart the computer (or start the "Security Center" service), and then open the Security Center again.
closed everything, warm boot.
and here i am back again.
got online with no problem, or at least with normal problem, this is a VERY cheap isp. i am sending myself email to and from yahoo, hotmail, a pop account.
i use outlook express for hotmail, ePrompter for yahoo. everything is sending to the first address but refusing to send to two addresses in the address line. never do that of course. did take two addresses in BCC.
have Google toolbar, which i am passionate about and would hate to lose.
the security center still says it is not available. click on the firewall icon there and it is on.
followed directions exactly, worked exactly.
now am i ready to uninstall norton?

Hello Annie
Just to add to your downloading Spybot S/D, did you do this "Search for Updates".
If any updates are found, place a check mark next to each and click on "Download Updates". Then rescan your computer with Spybot.
Note:
When downloading malware removal programs, check for updates and install them (its just to make sure the program is up to date for any new infections), then scan the computer.
Cheers:)

thanks, but spybot was way ahead of you. during the installation it made me go back on line and download updates. wouldn't do anything until i did. since i am on dialup and had closed everything before starting the installation this took some time.
am quite pleased with spybot today. don't think you were involved with my quarrel with them some years ago, see the new thread i just posted.

bye bye norton.
that uninstallation took a long time.
it is gone, i have rebooted. everything seems to be working fine. everything seems to be working faster.
no more nag screen.
of course now i won't know when windows is entirely loaded anymore.
thank you very much for your help. as you know i am nervous about making changes without someone holding my hand. know just enough to worry. but you are an excellent handholder, and i very much appreciate it.

I run Norton and it's in conjunction with Zonealarm - the freebie version on my laptop and Pro on my desktop.
What I've discovered is that how the programs are layered or sequence of installation appears to make a difference.
(In addition to Norton and ZA, I also run a popup blocker program and use spyware eradication applications.)
I do admit, I am an not vested in Norton (no anti-virus program is totally fail-proof); I run redundant checks also using, i.e., Bitdefender.
P.S.: When I installed Norton on my laptop, ZA was already installed and I was not prompted to remove it. It's always been running. Maybe you hit some tech. glitch.
Before you buy Norton Antivirus 2007, be aware that it will ask you to remove various programs you might also have running such as:
Zonealarm
Pest Patrol

I didn't hit any tech glitch. Norton 2007 got as far as autorun from the disk then told me I had various security apps I should remove before continuing since they were 'incompatible' with Norton 2007.
Are you sure you don't have 2006 version? That worked ok with everything.

If the other programs are not actually running when you install Norton, it's probably ok?? No?
What are some good alternatives?

Well, according to the warning screen that came up, Norton was incompatible with the other programs and insisted I unistall them all before trying to install Norton 2007.
I did disable a couple of programs and re-ran the install disk but it still insisted on their removal.
