Hi all,
I had cryosurgery for my tn on tuesday and ever since I have been constantly nauseous and throwing up. I've been taking 10-20mg maxolon (metaclopramide) every few hours but it doesn't seem to be helping that much. The doctor said it is probably a side effect of the anaesthetic but I though it would have passed by now as it was 5 days ago! I was only under for about 1 hour so I didn't really think it would be this bad!
Does anyone have any reccommendations/tips/ideas to help get rid of it!
Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Jen, I know how awful nausea caused by anaesthetic is, but I can't imagine that one hour of being under would leave you with 5 days of nausea. That seems really extreme. You might want to find out what it was that they used, in case you might be extraordinarily sensitive to it - just to have that in your records in case of future surgery.
I don't like the thought of adding yet another drug to the mix so instead of drugs for nausea I have been using ginger. I always have a container of the crystalized ginger - it's more like candy than anything else - and it works just fine for transient nausea. (Also for minor cases of seasickness, so when I go out on a schooner or a whale-watching boat with a bunch of friends I have my little stash of ginger to hand out.) Ginger ale doesn't seem to work anymore, I think it has been converted to sugar water with no ginger.
I hope it clears up soon. I guess if it were me, I'd not go much longer before I asked the doctor to come up with a different idea as to what is causing it. Good luck - Nancy

I'm with Nancy, do see your doctor and find out why you are thowing up. It doesnt see right that 5 days later you are still so sick. A little nausea maybe, but not all out tossing your cookies. Gidge, Stefanie and a few others mentioned a drug that is amazing for nausea I think it's called Zofran, but that would be a bandaid covering up whats really going on.

Thanks for the help, today hasn't been too bad I haven't thrown up which is good!
I did try eating the crystallised ginger but that kind of made me want to be sick, I had an organic ginger beer and that went down ok! I go back to see the surgeon in the morning so I'm going to talk to him about the nausea. I've only taken the anti-nausea meds twice today, I'm trying not to fill my body up with too much rubbish as I've been taking 75mg codiene every few hours + steriods for the swelling + antibiotics! I don't think my body really agreed with all of that but it's getting better!
I'll let you know how the follow up goes tomorrow,
Thanks again :D

Jen, hsve you had codeine before? Codeine is guaranteed to make me worship the porcelain goddess! (puke) Perhaps you are allergic to the codeine. If it really is a reaction to the anesthesia it should be noted in big red letters on the front of your chart. Zofran is the magic bullet for nausea, at $50 s pop; Kytril is also very good, also $50 per tablet.
good luck and please let us know how you are getting on.

Hi, Jen,
I agree with Cherie on the codeine and that's quite a cocktail of stuff you're taking! Antibiotics can upset your stomach by themselves, but 75 mg. of codeine seems like a lot and I've had stomach upset with much less. Be sure to discuss with your doctor tomorrow.
If the ginger beer is helping, stick with it. Your body is probably adjusting to the codeine as well. You might want to reread all the labels and cautions on all your medications and be sure you're following them carefully (it's hard when you're hurting, vomiting and taking codeine!). If there are any discrepancies (eg. one med should be taken with food, another on an empty stomach), call the pharmacy and tell them what's going on and ask what to do till you see the doctor tomorrow. Remember the people who fill the scripts are much more accessible to you and should be able to help with medication issues. And they often have faster/easier access to the doctor if needed.
Good luck and let us know how your appt. goes. Take care!

I'm with Sharralin, Zofran although outrageously pricey will save your life. I too experience horrific nausea with all these horrible drugs. DEMAND IT ASAP!
