good day everyone !

*snowflake we better get prepared... as snow can grow overnight in our backyards anytime

*snowflake as i come from a snowy country, i thought it would be interesting of starting a thread on SNOW... so that we could all share our concerns, our adventures, our fears, our joys... specifically related to snow falls and accumulations... and how they affect and change our lifes... *ack

*snowflake i have lots of fears about snow, as well as freezing rain... *storm as my condition has been deteriorating over the last few years during winter... and i know i'm not the only one... *grimace

*snowflake how about sharing tips that help us cope better with those white flakes and the cold that accompanies them... and not to forget outdoors winter activities we can still practice... alone, with family, and with our dogs...

*snowflake i chose to start it on this forum, as only part of our members live in snowy countries... therefore, only the ones interested could participate or visit...

and, remember... HUMOUR is always a good way to give ourselves an energy boost... before going outdoors... pictures, snow jokes or snow videos are more than welcome... as well as any of your suggestions...

the first link i fell on today is called: "shoveling snow"

hey to all you snow lovers, haters and those indifferent to it all!

i have mixed feelings about snow.

last winter, i found it rather peaceful.

you see, last year we had several 4-6 inch snowfalls. the snow would fall during the day and stop at night. the mail carriers here are very indignant if your snow is not shoveled when they are delivering mail. and probably rightly so. so, i would go out at night, 9, 10, 11pm and i would shovel the snow.

now, at that time of night, not many people are out. but, in the stillness and sound-absorbing qualities of the snow, i could hear a shovel or two scraping against the pavement in the distance.

most of the snow last year was like heavy powder, it didn't have much moisture in it. i would shovel the porch, steps, walkway and sidewalk in front. i would shovel out the driveway so my daughter could get out for work at 3am. i would rest every so often and enjoy the quiet and the untouched blanket of snow.

i enjoyed my time outside so much, that often i would shovel my neighbor's snow also. once you get into the rhythm of shoveling, it's easy to shovel 70 feet of snow rather quickly.

i hated one winter when we had a lot of snowfall. when you drove into a store's parking lot, the snow-plowers would have shoveled the snow into these very high piles, or walls. sometimes 10 feet high. it made me feel claustrophobic.

they say that the inuit have 100 words for snow. well, i found this humorous little page for all you who would care to view it: http://www.mendosa.com/snow.html

and here is my favorite pic of snow on a car. i think i saved it from a previous post on this website.

Jeannie, thanks for visiting... and sharing this list...

i just love your snowy car... it looks as though it's making a unhappy face... the eyes, the nose, the lights for big cheeks and the reversed smile on the bumper... :(

last winter, we broke records for heavy show falls and overall accumulation... they had said that it would be the same this winter, but apparently they changed their minds... i'll have to check that out... last year, some northern quebec areas had much less snow than usual and some southern ones had much more, like here in the ottawa & gatineau hills area...

i'm prepared... sand, some scrapers & shovels (1 for my car, the others for my deck), icers for my boots, showshoes, different kinds of boots... and a dog to take me out to play... :D

my version for this one: jatla - snow between your fingers or toes, or in groin-folds - would be - snowbetweenmytoes-aRRR!!!

i wish you have a good evening and a great weekend!

hi im new here and found this thread and thought i would reply. i too cant decide if i like or hate snow. its very pretty. especially when its untouched by humans or animals and its just pure with no prints. but then again, it is a royal pain.

i live in the syracuse, new york area where we are one of the snowiest metropolitan areas in the country. it drives me crazy, the snow we get. i hate shoveling it and driving in it. its so frustrating. i hate when you get such a bad snowstorm that you have to go out in the snowstorm and start shoveling so the snow doesnt get too high. i remember 2004 we got over 70 inches just in january. i remember cause i did most of the shoveling as i wasnt working. that was horrible. especially cause all the storms seemed to hit one after another towards the end of the month. i was out there every day shoveling so my parents could get in the driveway.

although driving in a snowstorm is the worst. i used to hate that the schools around here hardly ever used their snowdays. i think its funny though having lived in chicago for four years that people associate chicago with snow. i loved their winters cause it hardly ever snowed. they got like 50 inches at most all year. it was nice. no snow banks, you didnt have to worry about pulling out into traffic. i know i will totally miss those winters this year, as i have had to move back home, but oh well. i guess its back to shoveling.

I love the pictures you guys posted by the way...

Jeannie that one of your snow-covered car could enter a photo contest... very unique, original... and "expressive" ... indeed the car looks like it's making a face!

Lavandula, on the very first page you linked to about shoveling snow (which i am lucky not to have to do as we don't get enough), i found another link on how snowflakes are formed... thought i'd post it directly in here ... it is non technical... but cool (well, cold, really :D). anyway, i myself was fascinated! :) :)

And that no swimming sign on a frozen river is a riot!!! :D (butcha never know what ppl might try...)

Thank you for starting this thread Lavandula... it can surely "cover a lot of ground" so to speak :p

I am odd bird who likes walking under the snow... if it's not snowing too hard and the ground is not a mess. (yes, i'm picky!) But i dress up super warm with hat and a scarf that covers part of my hat and wraps up my throat real well, with hooded parka over the top... and gloves. then i feel sort of like an astronaut... well a snownaut. :D

Keep safe everyone!

Beautiful pictures. Myself I can spend a lot of time making my own snowflakes at this site.

there is another one as well but this by far is my favorite.

Run your mouse over the flakes and see all the beautiful ones. Some are so amazing, I can't imagine how they make them that beautiful.

Widespread areas of snow and icy precipitation will potentially move into the Plateau, Rockies and northern and central Great Plains early next week, creating dangerous conditions west of the Mississippi Valley and the western Great Lakes."

"Meanwhile, the cold air system which is expected to reach California and Arizona between Dec. 13th and 15th, could produce temperatures around 4 to 8 degrees below normal. Citizens should stay in touch with their local National Weather Service offices for area-specific data."

"But with so much snow already on the ground, the veteran weather prognosticator said he thinks that any upcoming balmy Christmas Day temperatures will not be able to melt away the growing snowfall base."

"Many of the wind-chill and snowfall warnings for the B.C. interior have been lifted, but temperatures could dip as low as -39 Celsius with the wind in places like Yoho Park."

"Environment Canada meteorologist Geoff Coulson told The Canadian Press that the Prairies would see even lower temperature than in B.C., falling into the -30s by Sunday evening."

"Phillips said some parts of the country are seeing snowfall amounts that have outpaced last year's record and near-record totals at this point in the season. But he also said it's unlikely that trend will continue."

"Already in many places in eastern Canada, we're ahead of the record from last year," he said.

Lavan,
Thanks for the pretty and the funny pics. It helps me contend with this cold weather here. It is below zero here, I am not sure of the the temperature with the wind blowing! ( I can't think of the name they call it right now )!

Dan is working, tearing down a Barn. I hate it that he has to work outside when it is so cold. He seems to be able to tolerate the cold a lot better than I can! I am pretty sure that we are going to have a white Christmas. I just hope that the roads aren't too bad for the family when they drive out here.

Dreaming of a white Christmas! Laurie

oh! not crazy about smog, but me not like earthquakes, tornados, hurricanes (because i walk slowly with a cane so i can't hurry up!), big snakes, scorpios, crocodiles, killing bees...

Hey there...

Lavandula, yeah i can do the accents too... and i can SEE yours and you mine... because we are using localized operating systems which support the characters.

(ANYONE can actually input them using the windows character codes but i am afraid the ones we type in - with either method - will be seen on a typical US operating system with typical browser encoder setting (US) see as a little black square or a 4plex of unicode characters. :(

that is why i wanted to put it in using html. that is how the one in my sig is done.

i dunno maybe since unicode has been around a while now and browsers have been modernized, it is no longer a problem.

TEST: open european quote, a grave, e grave, e acute, close quote
« à è é »

well, i never!!!
*ack

the forum replaces a grave and e grave with asterisks, if you do a preview post!! go figure! you try it lavandula... see if it does it to you too!!!

then when i retyped them and just posted without preview, it didn't do it... weird.

:confused::mad:

Anyway, glad you liked the snowflake Lavandula! :) :) :)

waves,

if one thinks that french accents are pests, check the Pronounciation Poem on the Comic Relief forum :D http://brain.hastypastry.net/forums/showthread.php?t=42564

when you say the windows character codes, do you mean the ASCII codes (like hitting Ctrl+Alt+144)... that's we had to do in offices that didn't have the french keyboards :(

how come the html codes work in the sig bloc and not in the posts ? admin or technical matter? just curious, cuz i'm interested in learning how to do them after i'm all unpacked and well organized...

btw, I am cachée en Italie... pour le moment, au moins.

And oui i am safe from the séismes... they are pretty far away even tho we were able to feel them from here. ;)

i see some of your characters came out and others not... i think it is not the font size which makes any difference... just if they were edited (i noticed if i do actions like going to "advanced edit" it messes up what is already there, but when you hit submit, whatever characters are still intact are.

Édith: [aha! i realize now i Édithed that original post where the characters came out... hmmmm. this is truly bizarre, so i would concur with your conclusions on the posting/previewing/editing functioning wrt these dratted accents.]

funny you want to be a programmer... i am a programmer... but can't deal with it as a "career" ... i want to retrain to become a healthcare professional of some kind ... when circumstances permit.

Édith: p.s. it works in the sig block because inline html is enabled. (you can see what is enabled when you are in advanced mode posting - it is different than what is enabled for the sig block.) yes these options can be enabled/disabled by administration. i do not know if what we are using are defaults or not. still it is a pain if you are used to typing in french having to type é for every é you want to type. i'm not even sure how to code a diaresis eg (Noël) in HTML either.

Hope you are enjoying coffee... :)

Waves,

accents here as much better hidden and harder to find than a needle in a hay bale !!

i've always had that amazing gift for finding lost stuff... but it only works with really lost stuff, not with voluntarily hidden stuff...

maybe more a graphic artist and web site designer... which involves some programming... but with only 30 min a day working at it... and not when i have a migraine or any other intense pain... not when i'm depressed... or when it's raining or snowing or windy... well, in my next life... :D

i would really like to be able to make these little graphics we see on glitter-graphics.com (and more FUN stuff too) (i have to be careful with e and sz, as i love the slow pace animated ones and the slightly glittering ones)

ok now, lets post this with regular font size, without previewing... then go edit the accents and re-submit...

you've definitely been heavenly inspired to cut such a beautiful snowflake...

much much more snowflakes alternating with freezing drops will be invading us tonight and tomorrow... almost midnignt here :( i prefer those remaining in the computer :D

hot recommendation from a recurrent bronchitis sufferer (me)... the best medicine ever is: GINGER... make yourself ginger tea with preferably fresh ginger, simmered in water 5-10 min, depending how big the pieces... make it as strong as you can stand it !!! the more you will drink of it, the faster the bronchitis will end up in the drain... :D

eating lots of it grated or finely sliced in all your food will help too !!! dry ginger in powder form is not bad as a second choice until you go buy the fresh one !!!

eating lots of it grated or finely sliced in all your food will help too !!! dry ginger in powder form is not bad as a second choice until you go buy the fresh one !!!you and me on the same page with the ginger. problem is getting it FRESH here - that is not just labeled and priced as "fresh" with grey icky mold all up inside. :( if i have the energy i too make decoction, also with cloves cardamom ginger boil 10-15 mins, strain or don't strain but keep ginger, dump into cup, add 2 big tbsp honey. add juice of 1/3 to 1/2. SUUUUUPPPER decongestant - upper and lower respiratory. 3x a day. and yes i eat the ginger slices afterwards. whether infused or decocted. if i am too broken up, i just infuse it and then jab at it with sppon to helpfree the essences into the mixture.

but nay, no more for fresh ginger i cannot have. probably at a nice family indian store i can get. only way would be send mom hunting in milan and put her through suffering in the cold, also she doesnt know how to pick it and will give up, go to supermarket and get me moldy stuff like last time. it doesn't LOOk moldy is problem, sigh.

so i make do with powdered ginger. it's ok. ginger was off limits for a while anyway when i had high intractable fever because it is a potent vasoconstrictor and in general raises body temp... undesirable with excessive fever.

am doing better now with antibiotic, fever when present comes lower and responds to antipyretics (it was't before... and it got to 102 then i was desperate and ate whatever antibiotic i had in house). also using an otc mucolytic tho will prob start with spice decoction as i get to feeling better. i have been bRoKENn.

hence my absence.

Anyway thanks for sharing about the ginger scoop Lavan... it's neat we do similar things. try the (spiced honey lemon decoction/infusion some time, adding the cardamom (rich in eucalyptus oil - good decongestant - but make sure the one you get has little sticky black seeds inside the pods, otherwise it's no good/immature/old.) and cloves (disinfectant, analgesic) too. btw, always add honey before the lemon, to reduce water temp to avoid destroying vitamin C. if you are sensitive to the acidity, you can skip or reduce the lemon but, if you use it, make sure to use enough honey to balance.

oh, another thing i like, for mild congestion or sore throat, but is perhaps an acquired taste is coffee with cardamom and honey. regular brewed (american style drip or whatever is fine) with milk, honey instead of sugar, and 2-3 pods of cardamom placed into the mug before pouring coffee.

alas... my dishes with ginger in them are of the past... i do not do my own separate cooking here... it would be too "complicate" to do so, even were i well enough to attempt it and had the ingredients, neither of which i do. so oh well. :o of course, with fever, have been unable to eat. only barely resuming in tid bits.

more snowflakes when i feel better-ER.

just thought i'd pop by, fyi.

glad you guys like the two i made. thanks for the compliments, i ate those up :D (slurp slurp ;))

I sure hope the rest of you are all doing well, and keeping WARM.

Waves,

thanks for sharing your receipes... i can't always find fresh ginger either at the little country grocery store... when i can find some in the big city grocery store, i cut it in small pieces or slice it thin and freeze it in small 1-teaspoonfull balls in a freezer bag... i hope la mamma doesn't put too much hot pepper in her food because this is also vasoconstrictor...

the best way to go with snowflakes is to take them one at a time :D

i wish you feel better SOON !!! take care !!!

Grrrrrrrrr...

Waves,
Your snow flakes are beautiful. What an artist you are! I used to spend a lot of time drawing and doing water color pictures but I don't like the wat they turn out due to my tremors!

Lavan,
Thanks for the recipes. I have been fighting a cold for a long time. I have tried conventional methoud but nothing seems to work!

It is supposed to be in the upper 40's today. I am glad since Dan works outside. I hate it when it is freezing cold and he is working outside in it! The snow is almost gone due to our mild weather. We had a short bout of sub zero weather but I will take the 40's anyday!

Hugs, Javi

Buttons is good to have unusual remedies for coughs and things. That reminds me, hubby has a cough, or a smallish one that I noticed for the first time again last night! I'll have to be on the look out for that since his surgery I was hoping that particular cough would be gone!

I'm wondering now if this is more of a habit than anything else? maybe so.

Our winters are nothing like I remember from when I was a kid!

hi snowfolks...

i have been battling bronchitis for too long now... it has worn me down... have not been on the forums... have not felt up to it

i have now lost 3 kilos that i had gained in 10 days on zyprexa... that's almost 7 lbs. just by not being able to eat for several days, and then in less-than-normal amounts for > 3 weeks now. not fun way to gain. not fun way to lose. but... just to look on the sunny side, right? hmphh.

oh yeah we've had some sun lately along with the sub-freezing temperatures.

we don't usually get 18 inches of snow or anywhere near that here, but this year, go figure, it dumped over a foot on us one night. then froze and is still frozen. perhaps there was some contagion by my participation in this thread, lol. my dad observed that even when i had 102 fever i had not lost my sense of humor.

oh, Lavi, i did say before....

the petition: i'll sign.

oh! and thank you for the lovely compliments on the snow flakes :) i have been drawing more on that site... it is addictive worse than a video game.

Javi, i'm so sorry to hear you can't watercolor any more coz of your tremors :( :( that really sucks.

well, i shall go now. i was graciously brought a cup of coffee. yay. energy?

i hope all of you are well, and that the year is off to a great start for you all.

waves I really enjoy your last snowflake. I haven't visited that site as much as I did the first 2 years I was participating. It may be time to get back in the game & make a few. It will be later on in this month before I do but IF I do, I will send *you one. Look for it. it will be oh course from joy.

see ya maybe. hope everyone is better. I turned my head down the other night and gross, it seemed like a water faucet had been turned on! I think my head feels better when it runs verses when it is stopped completly up! It's never just right any time, for me anyway. At least no full blown TN pains (yet, anyway).\ take care everyone.

Still looking for Lavan to pop back up somewhere. Everyone be on the lookout for her...

Waves & Joy,

i wish you both can stay away from things like bronchitis and tn as much as possible... they're nasty to have around...

Waves,

coffee is like chicken soup... if it's made with love, it'll pretty much heal anything... however, some nasty bugs will need much more than one cup a day !! :D i hope your sense of humour will melt all new snowflakes as soon as someone has had the chance to appreciate them...

i have been away from posting for a week... some stressful events/situation, plus the crappy weather of this nasty winter are causing my overall pain to flare up, sciatica and tn including on my L side... the bronchitis is still there but it is under control with lots of fresh ginger...

we're swamped in snow and they're forcasting some more of that white $htt for today and tomorrow... it's 2*F/-17*C here right now... brrr... *ack so i could also say that our temperature is in the teens... on the minus side... i think that all Europe goes by the metric system, doesn't it ?

however, my sense of creativity can still appreciate the intricate beauty of snowflakes... from indoors !! :D

my new avatar is a real picture of a snowflake... i find it is pretty amazing !!

i can see that you have tried your best to keep this thread HOT !! i'm hoping to update myself some time this week, hopefully, with all my preferred threads...

meanwhile, thanks for your participation and i hope you both feel better SOON !!

and i made some herbal tea, hot chocolate and coffee for you my dear friends, hoping this will help a bit !!

((( warm HUGS to you all )))

It reminds me of the Little House on the Prarie books. It got minus 40 back in those days at some of the locations they lived as stated in books.

Way to cold for me. It will get down to around 11 degrees here this week I hear and I will be inside, thank you very much. I hate that you have to leave the house to move a behicle even.

Be very careful. Remember that man falling and dying here when we had that ice storm. Just be very careful.

I love the snowflake avatar. It is very pretty. I hope the siatica and pain lets us and stays away for you.

Joy,

2 years ago, i discovered these icers (high quality tracks that i put underneath my boots, attaching w velcro straps) and i have been using them everytime i had to go out this winter :D

when i was younger, i used to watch the little house in the prairy on tv (when it was translated into french) and this program used to (still does if i see it by coincidence) bring back wonderful memories of when i was a child & teenager at my grand-aunt/uncle's place...

that's where i learned how to make homemade soap, cook everything from soup, cretons, ragout, roasts, head cheese* (from scratch with the whole pig's head!) tourtieres, pies, buckwheat pancakes, fruit chutney... on the kitchen wood stove, sew on the treddle sewing machine, do braided carpets, embroidery, crochet, gardening, with my grand-aunt, and go hunting for wild berries, hazelnuts, hare & partridge with my grand-uncle who was a huron-wendatt arboriginal...

I guess because of my age & the fact that my relatives knew how to put to use every bit of food etc they could, I know about souse meat and head cheeese. In fact, when I was a meat wrapper for a time (the pay was a lot better for that verses a checker) I sold such items.

I have in fact made my own mincemeat for pies and used green tomatoes to go along with the meat that filled the item out nicely. I will now google your ancestry and will enjoy learning some new and interesting facts, I'm sure. thanks. I dearly love looking up things on a computer. When I worked a lot of people were drug into using computers kicking & screaming. Not me, I was so facinated by theeeeeeem then & I still am. aw forget the many ee's LOL.
