View Full Version : No longer reacting to lactose??

Hey, Good Peoples. :)

So, I am wondering something. I refused to give up my beloved cheese upon discovering it was suddenly putting my gut through the shredder, and I started using LactAid milk and taking LactAid pills before eating.

Well, on occasion, I'd forget the pills, and I started to notice I wasn't reacting as much. Now I don't seem to react at all. I'm 4 1/2 months into eating GF (and about a month into sugar-free), and I'm thinking it's that my body is healing up.

Does that make any sense? I try not to eat a lot of cheese or milk products (I'm not a milk drinker), but I used to react even to a tiny bit. Now there seems to be no reaction.

So...is that it?? Or am I just weird?? :D :p (Okay...we already knew that! :D )

One generaly doesn't react to lactose, rather one may react to various consequences of not digesting lactose.

OK, You digest lactose four ways:
Lactase that you make (great, I suppose). Lactase that probiotic bacteria make (so-so). Lactase that dysbiotic bacteria make (bad). Lactase supplements that you take (OK).

Adult mammals making lactase is strange. Caucasian humans have “weird”, recent, post-Paleolithic mutation that produces lactase into adulthood.

Mammals make lactase at the very top of the small intestine. The primary small intestine area that gluten sensitivity damages is the same area that produces lactase!

If you are on the Gluten Free Diet, you might heal the lactase producing tissue. I didn’t. And mine might be gone for some other reason anyway.

I also am guessing that it might be possible for changes in small intestine bacteria may permit you some tolerance of lactose. So, maybe over time your gut populations changed.

Of course, casein sensitivity can do the same damages as gluten, so there you go.

I’d did gain some ability to digest beans on the GFD, I barely noticed a change from Famous Dave’s duded-up baked beans (no Bean-zyme), but had more gas from Chipotle’s plain beans. My best understanding is that bean (raffinose) digestion is entirely a bacterial process, either you have the right bugs or not. But maybe Famous Dave’s cooks their beans much longer.

Yep, experimented last Friday with a big pile of re-fried beans and no bean-zyme. Muuuuch better gas wise than before the GFD. Still not what I want to do much of yet.

But the lactose of a candy bar still causes some bowel irritation.

I've been experimenting with goat milk keifer with good results. No intestinal issues at all and no mucus formation in the sinus. I dont like it, but within 2 days it had my BM's firm (something I have not seen in years). Just going GF reduced the number of visits to the ladies room, but not the consistency too much. So I am sticking with the keifer. Also made a few almond meal pie crust with butter with no problems.

Really....the grains were/are my enemy.
