View Full Version : Dentist finding?

I went to the dentist today, as i have 2 teeth bothering me. Sadly one will be pulled and the other after 2 grand will be fixed. The dentist thinks that the teeth are part of my fevers and high white blood count. So maybe antibiotics will make me feel better.

Anyway, i'm sure you don't care about my teeth. My reason for posting is because of the discussion i had with the dentist when looking at the xrays of the tooth to be pulled. I asked if he would just pull it and he said not because of my root system. The root to the tooth butts right up against my sinuses, in fact on the 2D image it actually looks like it penetrated the sinus floor. He asked about my having sinus pain. I, of course, answered "who knows?" He then said that a surgeon needed to extract it as i would most likely need some type of grafting in the floor of my sinuses.

Questions? is it possible for the roots of teeth to cause a sinus opening to occur? Does CSF flow anywhere near? For me the nuclear tests have both shown sugnificant tracer on the pledglets. Just a thought.

Any one else with sinus and teeth issues?

I don't know but very interesting concept!

I had 4 wisdom teeth surgically removed in 2004.

It's not unheard of for the root of a tooth (particularly molars) to coexists in the sinus cavity. The root could cause an opening to exists between the sinus and root cavity, but not into where CSF flows. However, if you HAVE a sinus CSF leak, it may be possible to leak from a 'tooth' or tooth 'area' if the root of that tooth communicates directly into the sinus cavity.

I don't know if I've answered your question!

Laura and concerned gal,

Thanks for the replies.

Laura am i understanding you to say that the dumping into my mouth could be coming down through my tooth from the sinuses? Would i first have to have a leak into my sinuses then down?

I don't know, but the dentist was quite interested in the connection.

I think that it would be possible IF (and only if) you have a tooth root that exists in your maxillary sinus cavity. AND if you have a cranial leak that dumps into that same max. sinus cavity (remembering of course there are lots of sinus cavities and that the CSF would have to make its way into the same sinus cavity as the tooth).

I don't think I'd have the tooth surgically removed without addressing the leak because of potential infection concerns!

Found a picture so you can see how close the roots of your teeth are to the floor of the maxillary sinus cavity. It doesn't take much for a root to penetrate upwards into the cavity itself.

Laura,

you amaze me in how you can find and post anything. I want to be just like you when i grow up!!!!!

You bring up a very interesting point about infection. I am on antibiotics now, but the Dr. said if we didn't fix one, and pull the other the infection will come back . i will call and speak with both him and the surgeon and get their views.

Thanks again,
DK

I don't know if this relates, but I concocted a similar theory to explain my situation. After I posted it (see below) I realized how weird it must sound that I can't smell (olfactory nerves severed), but I am plagued with a constant toxic/metallic odor.

Well, I'll probably get banned for posting essential the same message 3 times in 3 different locations, but heck, ya never know where there answer might come from. And since this thread was so closely related, I figured I give it a shot and maybe add some information useful to the thread originator.

Anyway, here is my situation (as posted at 2 other locations)....

************
Hey, hey.

Below is the entire post I submitted at the welcome (post here first) point. It explains my situation. Please remember, I wrote and posted it there, so it may sound a little out of context.

Here goes:

First, hello everyone. I was amazed when I stumbled onto this forum. I had no idea so many people went through brain trauma of one sort or the other. Wow, what a community.

Around the first of the year a meningioma was discovered - apparently anchored to my olfactory nerves. It was remove, olfactory nerves severed, in April and I recovered (without smell and extremely diminished taste) quickly. However, since then I've been plagued with a horrific toxic smell and taste that no one around me (friends and family) can relate to. I'm not a whiner, but heck, I just want to know if it is normal.

When I first (a few minutes ago) found this site, I found a thread relating to CSF. I dunno, maybe that's what's up. I will also post this same message over there. It may not be cool to double post, but this (here) is where new members are supposed to log in and I have an idea I'd be directed over there anyway.

But hey, I'm all ears. I'll follow this thread and begin reading others and contributing where I can.

Below is a message I wrote to one of my doctor's assistants this evening. It will explain what I am dealing with.

Here's the message:

Thanks again for the great work you do.

I have a quick question. As you probably know, I have complete loss of smell due to the tumor removal. Well, except for a constant 24/7 toxic smell that permeates my senses and dominates what little taste I have left. Yes, the metallic/toxic taste and smell preoccupies my thinking. A little too much I’d say. It seems to be worse when I’ve been working hard and/or bending over a lot. The odor and taste is really horrific.

I haven’t mentioned it to anyone in the medical field because I figure it might be normal. Of course my wife and children have heard more explaining (complaining) about it than they would like.

It’s probably not related, but I also have a deep, deep cavity in the back left that’s been there before surgery and remains. The taste aspect of this distraction seems worse there.

I have an MRI coming up on the 20th of October and a follow-up in November.

Does this sound normal?

JicJac,

I posted this quite some time ago. i have trigeminal nerve pain on the right from the leaking. It comes and goes but never completely. I still get the metallic taste occasionally and am not sure why. Hope you find help and answers. I really pray you are not leaking as it can be a long journey to wellness.

DK: I've read some of the threads/stories. My issue is minor compared to some of the things I've read. If need be, I can live with my leaking (if that's what it is). Or, since it seems minor and random, maybe it will heal without intervention. It has only been six months.

I've had trigeminal neuralgia. It started a few weeks after I endured a cardiac arrest. The trigeminal pain is terrible and sharp. For me it was like suddenly, without warning, getting stabbed inside the ear with an ice pick.

In my thoughts,
