I had my yearly neuro exam yesterday at Cleveland Clinic and everything went well. I was surprised when my neuro asked me if I had ever been tested for vitamin d deficiency. I told her no I hadn't, and she wrote me an order to have it done.
She said that Cleveland Clinic's own research, and I quote, has "surprisingly" shown that a "very large number" of their MS patients have vitamin d defiency.
Ok, I just thought that was interesting and wanted to share it. I'll let you all know when I get the results.

Hi Kim, Glad your exam went well. :)
In May of this year, my 25-OH, D3 was 39 ng/mL. Normal is 20 to 100 ng/mL. So that is low - normal.
Since then I've been taking 1000 IU of D3 almost everyday.
Let us know what yours is!

My wife got a script from one of her two neuros for 50,000 IU once a week. We followed up and found that it's D2 and not D3, so we followed up with the doc and he said we could continue on 6000 IU D3 per day. Here's an interesting link: Vitamin D intake and incidence of multiple sclerosis (http://www2.kemc.co.uk/clients/msrc04/downloads/bbd_Asherio_MS_Vitamin_D.pdf). I know 50,000 or 42,000 IU per week sounds like a lot, but here's another study on safety: Safety of vitamin D3 in adults with multiple sclerosis (http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/reprint/86/3/645.pdf)

I was also D deficient. I was put on it for 2 months. I don't remember the dose; one cap. weekly. This was even before she thought I had M.S.
My neurologist said that after that a multi vit should keep it in the normal range
She said that the general population is low in D. I think it may have something to do with sun screen...just a guess. Sun is what helps the body manufacture D. My guess is that sun screen blocks this ability. Also I think many people go out of the house as much as they used to because of computers and other stuff.
