(Until today) Katie can't pull to stand. She can get into half kneel but can't pull up. There's a couple reasons/problems. One is she for some reason does not like to get her foot planted flat in half kneel, so she's up on tippy toes on the foot that needs to be planted for stability. Her ROM and tone is fine so I don't know why she doesn't plant solid. Add to that she has poor ability control over the thigh muscles for release/ support. Sorry drawing a blank on the proper term.. but basically with her thigh muslces, it's all or nothing, she can't hold an in between position needed for squatting, standing, or correcting balance. She's getting better but very slowly.

So.... put on the AFO's somewhat control the tippy toes, but then they big clunky heavy shoes get in the way!! Anyway. I guess it's all about motivation. I have been saying for a while now that the only thing keeping Katie from using the walker functionally is they fact that she can't stand up to it on her own. She tries, but it's a light frame wobbly kind plus she CAN'T pull up, so she gets mad and shakes it. LOL

Well I got the (may I say) brilliant idea to pull Jake's old gait trainer out of the shed and it is the perfect size. And I know the PT is not going to want her to use it She wants Katie to have nearly no support, but I am over ridding this one, sorry ;) ... we'll see what she says Wednesday. I have no supports on it at all, just use the frame as a walker, but it's very stable.

And guess what? Yep, she pulled up to stand on it 3 times today!!!!! :) :) :) The only help I gave her was to help get the clunky AFO from under her butt. It'll definitely come with practice. And something else I like about the gait trainer is that I can just help her turn her body around and she can use it as a posterior walker to get herself out of a jam. We only walk in the house because it's so hot and gnatty here. So we have a 20 foot area in the living room and it helps to be able to use it in posterior in some of the corners.

The other YAY today was when she was walking, she had a mini tantrum :) when we walked toward the door and she thought she was going outside. I said no outside and sat her down. She looked at me and said "wah" (walk) and tried to sign it. So that's cool!

Micky... great idea! (Have to ask... find any snakes in the shed?? ROFLMAO!) I say that anything that helps Katie to do what she needs to do is great, and should be encouraged! Remember that the PT didn't want you to let her use the Kaye walker either, but Katie loves it and is motivated. So you just keep doing what you do, and Katie will let you know if it's right or not!

Super cool on the signing... she's doing so well... keep it up!

You do what you gotta do sometimes. Especially when it works. Karen

Jimmie has borrowed a gait trainer from PT. He does really well in it. He doesn't move it independently yet, but I think he will get there. I put him in it on Thursday to go to playgroup and he held my hand and walked in it clear across the parking lot! Yay!

I say if it works, let her use it!

Way to go Katie! Back when Tom was learning to walk, they loaned us a sturdy toy shopping cart. We were told to weigh it down with water bottles to make it more manageable for Tom. The weight made it slower, less likely for it to run away from Tom (and Tom fall on his face), and it made it less likely to slip away from him while he was pulling up on it. As he got used to it, we decreased the weight in the shopping cart until it was empty. To me, it sounds like you're doing something similar for Katie. If she needs a little extra support (sturdier gait trainer), I'd let her use it, too. Let her get the hang of putting it all together, and then switch her back to the wobbly walker. Especially since you already have the trainer and you're not out any extra $$$.

Good work Katie

We have done a similar set up to Kathy's shopping cart with my niece. I bought a wooden trolley (like those that carry the wooden blocks) that is very sturdy and very hard to tip. We have put heavy stuff in it to slow it down. At first we had to slow it down as well by stepping in front of it so it wouldn't slide out in front before she got her next step right, but she can now control it herself.

My niece is 20 months old and has CP from a birth injury. She can cruise along the furniture and She can now walk if you hold her hips. She has a walker too with a harness that goes under her bottom. She also wears AFOs. Katie reminds me a bit of my niece.

I agree with what everyone else said and personally I LOVE my walker! Self-confidence and security breeds independence in mobility, and Katie's walker gives her that so GO KATIE!! and congrats Mickey on your resourcefulness both with the PECS and getting Jake's gait trainer out - the setup with the PECS looks pretty cool aesthetically too! By using PECS you're just giving Katie more options to communicate with different people (who don't know sign) and fingers crossed when she gets to school the school will be sensible and take HER lead! Congrats all round!:D

WTG Katie.....Micky that is wonderful. Whatever works for Miss Katie, and once she gets comofortable and stronger, I am sure with her gusto she will be doing it solo in time.
