My mom's VP Shunt failed about two weeks ago and now the NS have decided to do put a LP Shunt in her...she has lumbar drain in right now..it's been nearly two weeks since she got that in....my mom bleeds so easily so everytime they do something on her she bleeds, so they don't wanna mess with the shunt that's in her... I guess leaving her shunt in there is safer than them trying to take it out? right? sigh.. from not knowing what hydrocephalus & shunt was to trying to figuring out what it is very overwhelming...I still can't believe my mom is going thru all these...and don't wanna think about her having to live like this for life...If anyone can give me some information or advice on LP Shunt, I'd deeply appreciate it..thanks..

I have an LP shunt that was put in about four months ago. Your mom's case is probably different than mine, because i have had hydro all of my life. I am assuming that hers is NPH? That can make a difference in treatment options sometimes. The LP shunt that was put in did not drain enough for me, so they put in a VP shunt too. I have had problems with the LP shunt irritating my sciatic nerve. I have to have the LP shunt taken out Monday and a different type put in. I am happy to answer any of your questions to the best of my ability, however, it will only be from my own experience with an LP shunt. PM me if you would like, or i can check back in here later on. Hope that helps a bit.

Thanks Jess, my mom developed hydro after a subarachnoid hemorrhage due to ruptured aneurysm after a car accident...she has a lumbar drain right now to try to drain out her fluid and they're going to remove it when she has her surgery... she seems normal and actually doing very well, but I'm scared of her having another surgery after seeing what she's gone thru...I heard that the chance of shunt clogging is much more with the LP Shunt...which even makes me more nervous and scared... anyway..thanks for sharing with me and replying to my question!
