View Full Version : Numb Heel

Anyone else?
My left heel is numb (sole-side), but feels like something is sorta tearing inside when I stretch my leg. Before it went numb, it felt like there were pebbles or something in there - whatever there is... but in that part of my foot.
I had been having probs. with the tendon (I think it is) that runs through the calcaneus thingie. (Great clinical terms, huh :o.) My doc (PCP/Internal Med.) had said that prob. was more commonly seen in women who wear heels and in athletes. Neither of which is applicable here.
Last time I saw her, she said there's something wrong with the plantar, but it's not plantar f., and she Rx'd Mobic.
In the weeks since seeing her, the pebble-like feeling started. Now... numbness and the tearing feeling.
My shins also hurt like h3LL at times.
I don't know if this is an ankle-foot prob. or something else, maybe related to my screwed up S-spine or some dermatome.

I know, this is quite self-serving but I'll risk asking (maybe even myself ) anyway...
S-1? Maybe?

Bobbi, I really don't have an idea, I have S1 nerve root damage and have numness in my feet, but not the areas you have. Maybe you should ask your doc for xray's or better an MRI to see what is going on in there.
Lot of help I was!

Plantar Fascitis (sp?)
It sounds like you have a heal spur Bobbi. The fact that you have that bruised peppel feeling makes me thing it's probably not S1. I had that for one year, it was hell. I literally walked on my toes of that foot for one year it hurt so bad.
Then after massive doses of anti-inflammatories, Vioxx I believe, it went away. But guess what? My blood pressure went sky high and hasn't come back down in 7 years. Hmmmmm
Every now and again I get that feeling and it makes me sick to think that it's starting over again, then it goes away after a few days. I also had to have an injection in my heel which I will never, ever, ever, ever, ever do again. It was a horrific experience to say the least.
They have a plastic boot that you can wear when you're sleeping that will help stretch that out. It forces your toes up like your trying to stretch your calfs out. It did help a little bit too. Actually, it helped with the pain.
Hopefully yours won't be that bad and it will go away with the Mobic.

Thanks, Kathy and Linda :).
It sounds rather painful, Linda... how your foot felt and everything related to helping it feel better.
My doc said it's not Plantar F., though there has been some plantar pain; it's secondary to whatever the prob. actually is. I've been telling/asking my docs (PCP and rheumatologist) about it for several months now.
I had an EMG/NCV. Some of the things the neurologist noted in the "Findings":
"Bilateral lumbosacral radiculopathy of the L4-5 level"
"Right tibial motor and the left tibial motor nerves showed decreased velocity (knee to ankle)"
"Evaluation of the right peroneal F-wave and the left peroneal F-wave showed prolonged latency"
"The right tibial F-wave and the left tibial F-wave showed prolonged latency"
"Conclusion: Abnormal study."
The neurologist gave me a copy of the Summary Tables, F Wave studies and Paraspinal EMG. And, with all of that? I may as well be trying to learn a foreign language. I can sorta see what the doc is referencing in the "Findings" (based on the "Norm" info. also cited).
This heel prob. surfaced way after the EMG/NCV yet I'm wondering if it's all somehow inter-related.
I will ask about X-rays, Kathy, but will need to wait until after I get the other tests my docs have been wanting done: heart scan, DEXA scan (for my lovely, early onset osteoporosis), mammogram, and a ton of blood work. If I can hold off my doctors a bit longer (on getting those things done and the results, of course), my new insurance will take effect.

Bobbi, I sure hope all you tests come out fine. I fully understand the early onset osteoporosis, I went thru surgical menopause at 25. At least the DEXA scan is quick and painless, unlike so many other tests!:)
Take care, and again congrats on the job!

Bobbi, sorry to hear about this problem. I hope your doctor and pinpoint the source and find a solution that works for you.

Bobbi, Sorry I havent got a solution for you, just a commiseration and to say its good to see you again. I kept popping in occasionally to the other forum, and never saw anyone I knew so gradually I stopped. Then I realised that after four or five years, if any of us were still having problems, chances were that I might find some of us over on chronic. So I dropped in. How are you apart from the chronic horrible stuff that we seem to have to get used to live with. I have very sore heels, and no solution for them. What medication do you take that might help. I have generalised peripheral neuropathy, for which I take topamax, which in itself has its own set of side effects. I am on fentanyl patch for pain relief, and tramadol also. thats about it. It doesnt cover it. I still get apalling nerve pain, and sometimes my heels are worse than anything especially at night. I feel very very bitter against the surgeon that put the screw through my spinal cord instead of through my vertebral pedicle. It means that I will always have artificially induced nerve irritation, and I think its quite possible that this caused my bowel and bladder irritation also.
Have you, or anyone heard any news of Gene? AKA Ponyboy. I havent seen word of him for ages. I know he said his wife was not great, and I suspect he might have had some health issues also, but I do hope he's OK because he was one of the very first to welome me when I first logged on.
Bobbi I hope you are well. Glad to have found you and others again.

Marijo, Gene popped into the Depression Forum and I believe the Pity Party Room in Spinal Disorders.
I am so sorry you continue to suffer from the result of a careless surgeon!
Hope to see you around! Take care,
Kathy

I've missed "seeing" you, Mary, yet was hoping that you were experiencing somewhat of a reprieve. No such happenings, however, from what you shared. I'm sorry.
My doc(s) Rx'd Mobic for other pain I was having, near this bigger pain area in my feet. It doesn't do anything for this heel pain, that's for sure, but it has helped for my calcanous (whatever the darn things are called) areas and knees. The med. that is kicking the heel pain: Stadol (rather, it's generic, since that's the only way it's filled here).
For the first time in such a long time, I have barely any pain in this bothersome heel. It's been like this for a day, but I've not, yet, been to sleep. As you know, it is worse at certain times. For me, the worst is after I awaken and the evening.
:)
Although I'd prefer if you were on travel journeys, I hope you won't be a stranger, now, in these parts of the wee li'l web :D.
