View Full Version : OT: Prayers for our friend, Shotspine

Dear Friends,
Please say a prayer for our friend, Shotspine. Her life, like many of ours, has been a roller coaster of pain and illness and she is in a down swing right now. If that is not bad enough, her beloved dog took ill today and is in severe pain and her car broke down a few days ago and she is without transportation to get her dog to the vet, relying on neighbors and family(none of whom are nearby).
No matter how sick she is, if she feels she can help someone, she will add to our posts. She needs your help via prayers more than ever.
Thanks, Diandra

I am so grateful and humbled by your thoughts and prayers. Thank You all so much. River, my dog is doing a little better. I'm giving him some of my meds plus fish oil and flax oil for inflammation. My car seems to be a challenge for the shop as they can't figure out what is wrong. I live in an area that is impossible to get around without a car. My neighbor, who is at least into her 70's, little tiny white haired lady that runs my errands when I can't, takes me to injection appts, and anything else I need. She even offered to take me and River to the vet but he is 85 # and I don't think I can lift him into her car. He is a Siberian Husky and shedding badly right now and she is meticulous. So for her to let me put River in her car is huge. I really don't know what I would do without her. I try not to say, or ask too much of her as she will run right out and do it. She won't take anything in return....and that is final (her words).
I am just watching River carefully and giving him all the nutrition, fluids, meds to keep him comfortable. If he shows signs of pain like he did yesterday, I will find a way to get him into her car. In the meantime, just trying to help him with what I have. I'm also going to em Dr. Jones, our wonderful man and Vet that we are so honored to have among us.
Mrs. D.....you must be confused as you used words I would describe for you. You have been a hero of mine for the last 10 years, or so. I don't respond to you often but I follow you and trust your advice without reservation. Sometimes I feel I should jump in when you are getting flamed, but I don't just so it doesn't add fuel to the fire. I wish everyone knew what you are really all about. Love you Lady and am so glad you stick around even when the heat gets hot.
Diandra.....Thank You for starting this thread. I really do need all the good thoughts and prayers from any and all that are so inclined.
I don't say it but........you are all very important to my life. I learn so much, from our pets, to family issues, to medical and pain issues. CP forum is truly my lifeline to the world of sanity and feeling safe as we all understand each other in so many ways.
Blessings to you all!

Say what kind of pain is poor River having? Joint problems?
Vets are now using SAMe you know for arthritis/joint issues in dogs (and cats).
I met a Rottie on vacation one year who was even on it.
So do consider it, if the vet has not offered it.
http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=1&cat=1327&articleid=3062
most Vets consider it for liver issues...but it works on joints too.
My cat used it for 3 months with great success.
A dog the size of River would get a human dose of 200mg.
The Denosyl form for smaller animals is 100mg.
My cat's Denosyl cost us more than MY SAMe that I use myself!
So ask your vet.
If you search here, I have some posts on this forum about it I believe.

Oh SS, in spite of your problems you took time to answer my posts yesterday, I can't tell you how much that means to me. You are definitely a special woman and I will keep you and River both in my prayers. Thank you for being part of the BT family here on the CP forum. ((((((((Shotspine))))))))

I wish I knew what exactly is wrong. I thought it was his left hip. I didn't do anything yesterday except just hug him and pet him gently. I didn't think he would take more pain with me doing a "body feeling around". He really yelped when trying to get up and even walking......but....he wasn't limping at all. He tried to jump up on my bed and you would think he got shot. Since then, he just goes to the bed, looks at it as if he really wants up but isn't going to do that again (for now). He just turns around and slowly walks away ......so sadly.
He got up fine this morning but cried a little walking across l/r. I went and loved him up and felt all his legs and hips without any problem. Then I went for his sides. I touched a spot just in front of his left hip which caused a yelp. At the time, I was feeling both sides at once but was pretty sure it was left side. Just awhile ago I felt around just his right side and no problem. When I went to rub his left side he walked away....so.....it doesn't sound like a joint to me. Maybe a sprained muscle? He has had minor hip pain a couple of times but 1 dose of aspirin did the trick.
Saturday I left him alone for a short time (he doesn't like that so I rarely do that). I had to have my car towed with windows wide open as couldn't get them closed so I cleaned out everything in my compartments and put in 2 plastic groc. bags. I just left them on the floor and left. He has NEVER touched anything, ever. When I got home the bags were torn to shreds and stuff everywhere........so....maybe he ate something that is stuck inside of him? But he is pooping just fine.
He is 12.5 y/o and has never been sick or hurt (except some seasonal allergy which hasn't appeared this spring at all). He's also very allergic to fleas, but he gets treated. So......I'm kinda in a "what the heck?" mode. I really can't afford my car repair and big vet bill. I saved enough (took 12 mos) to get him in for his exam, teeth cleaning, and needed shots, especially rabies, which is due.) I had made an appt a couple of weeks ago for him but car was not running well enough to trust it. So...if I can get him back to normal and take him in as scheduled when my car is fixed, that would be fantastic.
Any ideas? I'm anxious to try SamE myself, just waiting until I can afford it. Should I give it to him also? He's been on Canidae Food his whole life which has no wheat, gluten, preservatives.....people quality food plus glucosamine and other goodies.
I'm so afraid as he is my sidekick and getting old. Anything I can do, and afford, I'm sure willing to do.
Thanks my Dear Mrs. D. I will check your links asap but need to get out of sitting position for right now. You are truly one of BT's treasures and that other place too.
Edited to Add: I reread and said I didn't do anything yesterday.....I did. I gave him small doses of my pain med and muscle relaxers 3X in 12 period. Also gave him Fish Oil and Flax Seed Oil. Today I gave him dose upon waking up and again at 2:30. He's starting to whine again but am going to wait an hr unless he gets really uncomfortable. Maybe I'm not giving him enuf of anything.

Arthritis? or bursitis?
I know that, among some breeds, dysplasia (sp?) might be more common than among others.

Thank You all so much. I'm sorry for not addressing each of you but I'm so frazzled I had a hard time figuring out how to even reply:confused: Bobbi, I think it is possible that he is beginning to get arthritis/bursitis because of his age. I've had huskies for the last 34 years, first 2 I had for 10 yrs each and both disappeared at 10 y/o. Dognapped, I'm sure. Never had or heard of huskies with hip issues but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I hope to get him to vet soon.
I believe all the prayers that have gone out for him have helped alot. He is doing much better....no cries or yelps today but he still just looks longingly at the bed and won't try to get up on it. Still moving slowly.
Along with the prayers coming from here, Diandra put out a request on a pet prayer place and she said the response was amazing. I feel so blessed right now.
Sorry I didn't get back to this yesterday. My back said "No"....get yourself in horizontal/fetal position NOW.....so, I did.
Blessing to each and everyone of you!!

My 11&1/2 year old retriever/collie Keri has been having pain getting up. I get a catalog that you can get all kinds of things for pets. I ordered their Joint Care 3 for her and give it three times a day. She is much better and going on walks. Its DrsFosterSmith.com. I get shampoo with lidocaine and hydrocortisone for my chihuahua The Flea, she has a lot of allergies, very itchy, we've tried about everything else even prednisone which was giving her liver trouble so we stopped it.
The prices are good, you can even get the vaccinations to give them yourself, much cheaper! Good luck, let us know what happens.

Thank You for that info Lil E. I will go check it out. River is doing much better but I still need to get him to vet for a good check. He hasn't tried to jump on bed at all but last night he got as far as putting his front paws on it and decided not to go any further. I tried to get him to do it again so I could lift his hind end up but he wouldn't. Probably best as then getting down might have been "not so good".
The weather is constant thunder and lightening so am going to unplug everything again, go pick up my car and hope all your prayers keep it running as well as the shop says it is. Then off for em test and tabs and back home to call vet. In the meantime, he is just staying pretty much in "lay down" position. I will need to find someone to help me get him into my car. It's a jeep and a pretty good distance from ground. I may not get him into vet until Fri but as long as he keeps himself quiet, I don't think more damage is happening. He hasn't yelped for last 2 days, but heard a couple little cries.
Better get this pc unplugged. Thunder is right here.
Thank You All for your thoughts, prayers and caring!
