At what point during a coiling procedure is the patient put under? Specifically I'd like to know if the patient is still conscious when the catheter is inserted into the artery.

Thanks,

Austin

During my coiling surgeries I was always asleep before they inserted anything...after they got me on the table they put me right out, then proceeded.
I was awake through all my angiograms though..while the catheter was inserted..but, never during the actual coiling surgery...hope this helps..take care

Welcome to the site. There are a lot of wonderful here, a lot of knowlegde and support.
They knock you out before they start anything. You will meet with the Anesthesiologist before they start anything. :p They will put in a IV, give you some "happy juice" while they talk to you. My hubby was still in the room with me every time. Then they push the med's that put you under, right before they take you into surgery. You prob. won't remember much!! ;) I have had a stent and coiling done in 2 sureries.
You are only awake for the angiograms, have you had one done?? When are you having your coiling??
I hope we can help you out, Take care and please let us know if you have more questions?? I will be keeping you in my prayers, Tricia

Thank you. The question relates to an acquaintance who is scheduled for a coiling to repair an unruptured aneurysm, that is fairly large (6mm) and presumably growing because she is having quality of life issues. Her headaches had became more frequent, and culminated in an incident last week where she suffered temporary vison loss, violent head pains and loss of consciousness for 30 minutes.

She had a battery of tests and I'm not sure which one finally revealed the unruptured aneurysm, but a catheter was inserted along the way in at least one test.
