I have had problems with chronic constipation. I have tried all the over the counter meds, none of the work. I usually end up giving myself an enema, that 90% of the time don't work but when I end up in the ER I can tell them all the thing I have tried. I usually end up in the hospital, due to fear of rupture of my bowel.
I drink the awful mag citrate with no luck, I then I have to drink the gallon of, I can't think of the name. It usually will kick in. What an awful feeling.
Anyone find any magic cures while I have been gone??

Try a good senna tea ie Smooth Move by Traditional Medicinals. It also includes several other herbs and spices. If I haven't moved in several days, I will make a strong cup with two bags. If I haven't moved within 24 hrs, I will repeat..........maybe using three bags. It gives me a good "normal" movement..............no cramping or explosive movement.
The gallon jug your referred to was most likely Go Lightly. That is nasty stuff. One time I was in real trouble and my primary doc put me in the hospital, then called in the Rear Admiral for a consult. They had me drink TWO gallons of the stuff then chased it with high hots. I thought I was going to die.
In addition to having IBS, I am a spinal patient on big time pain meds. It takes a lot of work and creativity to have anything approaching normal movement. I find it helpful to rotate my "cures". If I use anything too very long, it loses it's effectiveness.
Best wishes.

G'day - Information from the Encyclopaedia Britannica said that vinegar stimulates the action of the intestinal muscles - it also stimulates the saliva glands. Digestion starts with the saliva.
I take one teaspoon of brown vinegar in water or juice, or off the spoon, once a day - (twice a day if really constipated, one dose in the morning, and one at night ) - this seems to "keep things moving."
I've been taking brown vinegar for constipation for several years. A friend said she takes it for diarrhoea.
So it may help many others with all sorts of bowel problems.

That's a great one, Ainee. Don't use this if you are proned to candidas flares.

Please be careful with Senna as it stains your colon and can cause colonoscopies to read incorrectly. It can hide some lesions and other discolorations in the colon. This info was provided by my Gastro Doc.
Spiney, what are High Hots? Never heard that term.

Spiney - Years ago I used to suffer with thrush now and then, which I treated with an anti fungi cream, but since I've been taking brown vinegar - as well as my other treatments for other symptoms - I can't recall having thrush very often.
The brown vinegar I take, is the cheapest brand, so isn't as strong as other types of vinegar. Maybe the weaker brown vinegar does the job without adding to the problem.
I also take Vitamin B1 - hydrocloric acid. I read the other day that hydrocloric acid is found naturally in the stomach, and is essential for the digestion of food in the stomach.
As vinegar stimulates the saliva glands - the beginning of digestion - and vinegar also stimulates the muscle action of the intestines, I believe that's the begining of a healthy digestive tract the whole way through.
I ease constipation with my regular dose/doses of brown vinegar. I don't take any drugs or perscribed medication.
Some nights I wake up with a dry mouth, and find my breathing shallow - I just take a 250mg VB1 tablet and go off to sleep, knowing that the VB1 will create saliva in my mouth within a short time - it also increases my breathing.
Please see your doctor before changing any medication.

Vitamin B1 is thiamine, not hydrochloric acid.

I have serious problems with constipation pretty much all the time. The old gallon jugs of Colyte can take hours to do anything. I now take Yerba Prima psyllium husks powder. With lots of water it expands in your bowel and works quickly. I use one table spoon twice a day to try and stay regular. When it doesn't keep me going I'll have an extra tablespoon with 4-6 glasses of water and it will straighten me out. It's a natural fiber supplement and can be found at any heath food store. You must drink water with this to be effective. Good luck.

Thanks to you all!
I will try these things in hopes that they will work for me! I am willing to try anything, I am tired of the Go-Lightley. It eventually will work but what a pain to drink 2 gallons of that let alone anything!
I am trying to stay out pf the hospital. I have myoclnal Cerebellar Ataxia. It really makes it hard to exercise, I know that would help me alot.
I will try the vinegar, It can't hurt , I will also visit the herbal store and get some yerba prima pysillium. I will let you know how it goes.
Thanks again for the help, I am hoping to prevent any further hospitalations!

I think you mean= thiamine hydroCHLORIDE ?
Hydrochloride does contribute some acidic properties, but in the small amount combined with thiamine, it is pretty small.
Betaine HCl however, does acidify the stomach, and is used in patients who have low acid issues, called achlorhydria.
Many common websites on the net use the designation
betaine hydrochloric acid.... and this is not exactly chemically correct. The correct term is Betaine Hydrochloride
This link explains it some:
http://healthlibrary.epnet.com/GetContent.aspx?token=e0498803-7f62-4563-8d47-5fe33da65dd4&chunkiid=21560
This link explains betaine HCl in detail:
http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/betaine-000287.htm
The betaine portion of betaine HCl provides glycine to the homocysteine system which uses the methyl groups to make SAM for you so you can repair tissues. Glycine is also found in root veggies like beets.
Many substances and drugs have HCl in their name. Mostly they are in such low doses (milligrams) that they do not affect stomach acidity radically.
If a person needs to increase the acid in the stomach, Betaine HCl is preferred and more successful.

Thanks for correcting this for me Mrs D - Kira corrected my other mistake - I will have to write all these words down next time so I don't have to trust my memory.
Javi - I hope the brown vinegar gets things moving for you.

i have posted this info on this website elsewhere.........i am in the middle of a book called "Fiber Menace".......by: Konstantin Monastyrsky......so much of what he says is accurate from what i know myself.......the rest of it does sound possible.........u might try reading it........he also has a website: fibermenace.com, i think.........i know we have all been told for decades that we need to eat more fiber, but when this info came out at least 15-20yrs ago, probably more, we actually had less health issues........i know that 30yrs ago, we had less diabetes, heart disease & cancer & look what the food pyramid & the government has done for us........so i have no problem having an open mind.........we r told low-fat & high carbs will make us thinner & we have many times more obesity than 20 to 40yrs ago......so when i hear of something that makes other companies, dr's & pharmaceutical companies rich & richer, i have to take a look at something that flies in the face of what is thought of as "COMMON SENSE"........it seems that the government, FDA & the medical profession tells what we should b doing & when we do, we get sicker, it seems.......it's all big business.......check out the website & the book.......
