The current AVG free is discontinuing as of Jan 07.
I tried downloading the new Windows version and after about an hour my MSN IE 6 rejected it.
I accidently messed up my MSN IE a while back & the MSN update site says I already have it and won't/can't reinstall it. No MSN help now for a 98 SE.

A Yahoo promo installed it's self on my IE. I haven't signed on yet. Would that help me to get the new AVG Free?
Any suggestions...for a computer illiterate ole lady..? :(

hi neoma

i am also a little old lady and almost everything i know about computers goes back to vacuum tubes, so i understand how you feel.

one of the nerds will be along shortly to give you better information than i can, but i did want to tell you that the AVG will still be free. what they have done is provide a crippled version of it for free. this is explained on this link
http://www.grisoft.com/doc/7/lng/us/tpl/tpl01/fht/7.471?num=471#faq_471

or if that is too long to work go to
http://www.grisoft.com
click on the FAQ
and scroll down to FAQ number 470 and 475.

just found a better link
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

which says that they will update users during the next month to the next edition of the free AVG, much clearer explanation.

since most of the stuff that are prohibited in the free edition are things i would never want to use in the first place, i am happy with the free edition.

it says that it won't work on the 64 bit windows edition.

from my windows help, there are apparently three versions of windows XP: Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional, and Windows XP 64-Bit Edition.

i think i have XP home edition, but that is about as far as i can figure out.

bobbi or howdydave should be here shortly, then we will have the information we need.

Annie,
Thanks so much for your response. I appreciate the links!
I've tried twice to load the new version and both times after a while I get a window from MSN IE saying it had to time out. Donno what that means but it stops the AVG download.
Maybe when AVG automatically downloads to the new version in a few days, it will work ok.
Thanks again!!!

worth a look here too -->http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

IE is not a good choice with win98se anymore.IMHO.

Hello
If by chance you cannot download AVG, you can try AntiVir its free.
I,ve been using this AV(antivirus) program for about 2 yrs and never had problem with it.
Click me ----> Avira AntiVirŪ PersonalEdition Classic (http://www.free-av.com/)

Note:
Run only one AntiVirus program at a time, running two or more can cause conflicts between them.
(Different AV programs have different names or definitions for the same malware)
