I was just wanting to try and conncet with some other people who are trying to lose weight.

I am morbidly obease, and have been on the yo yo dieting for years. I have just been hitting a brick wall since my mobility has decreased. I was watching a show on Discovery Health about weight loss tonight that was very motivating. I have been thinking about turning to the lap band surgery, I was told I couldn't have the bypass because of other health problems.

I guess I am just looking for others in similar boats.

I'm afraid that it isn't just sugar you need to give up. Fructose and High Fructose corn syrup are worse and sweeteners are almost as bad.

Carbohydrates raise insulin levels.

When insulin levels are raised your body only burns glucose and stores fatty acids so your fat cells enlarge.

To allow the fatty acids to flow out of your fat cells you need to lower your insulin levels and avoid eating anything that may raise your insulin.

When you keep your insulin levels low by eliminating refined carbohydrates your body will burn change the fatty acids into ketones and your muscles and your brain will work better using ketones as fuel. So you will start to feel better.

I have lost 36lbs over the last 16 weeks by following this plan (http://blogg.passagen.se/dahlqvistannika/?anchor=my_lowcarb_dietary_programe_in) It has not cost me any money or time, I don't have to buy special foods or attend meetings or do any extra physical exercise. Nor do I starve myself. I eat bacon/eggs/mushrooms/tomatoes for breakfast, home made soup or salad for lunch and my main meal will be a meat/fish portion with plenty of veg, I substitute celeriac or cauliflower for the potato/rice/pasta/bread portion and try to eat a green leafy veg + carrots as well.

Apart from grapes/bananas I eat fruit during the day.

You will see from the above there is no need to starve to lose weight. I've eaten more calories daily than needed to maintain my basal metabolism. (http://health.discovery.com/tools/calculators/basal/basal.html) yet I've still lost 5 ounces every day and I haven't burn't these off with extra exercise. They have gone down the loo as ketones.

Losing weight is easy if you stop eating the foods that raise your insulin levels. You don't NEED to eat these foods. The presentation here by Loren Cordain explains why these foods may make you ill.

I started Weight Watchers 3 years ago August and lost 95 lbs in about the first year and a half. :) Then my body went into "crash mode." I was dx'ed with hypothyroid in August of last year, profound D deficiency in December...and Celiac on Monday. :( On top of that, I have a package of neuro issues I was born with (see siggy).

Have you had a medical workup recently? It's very possible you have any number of health issues that are aggravating your weight problems or preventing you from losing. I gained back 17 lbs over the past year because of these new dxs and am working to go completely gluten free to get healthy again. My thyroid and D are now normal :), so the Celiac is likely the crux of the problem, and it's appallingly common. I was reading last night that its occurrence is about 1 in 133!!

Please don't ever give up!! I can't have GBS, either. WW MUST work for me, but I even have to modify it because of the Celiac, which is even tougher. In spite of that, I will make the transition and get healthy, and so can you! :)

*hug and good luck!

I was fairly thin, average size until I was on steroids. I gained almost80 pounds. Now I am trying to lose it but it is so hard with all of my medical problems. I have been in the hospital more than I have been out for the last 6 months. I finally told my Dr's No more steroids, sure they help with my respiratory issues and arthritis but the weit isn't any better. My Dr suggested the Lap- Bad surgery but I can't find a Dr to do it with all of my health problems! I hope I can find one soon!

Corn syrup is the worst, since the brain doesn't recognize that you've eaten it. Therefore, the brain keeps thinking that you need more food, when you don't.

A low glycemic diet seems to be the way to go, at least that's what everyone is saying TODAY.

Tomorrow, who knows, right?

I find for myself that a Mediterranean diet works best, but then my genetic code comes from there!
