My mom just recently got out of the hospital from a bout of acute pancreatitis. She is doing fine but now has to eat a low fat diet. Well, since she has been on this diet her stools are much harder. She was telling me yesterday and I know she is a stickler for eating right, that no matter how much water she drinks, fruits and veggies too...her stools are worse. So, she had been using Miralax (prescription) which she now says is not working at all. Does anyone have any suggestions? All I knew to tell her was to increase her fluid intake and/or just call the doc to see what he recommends.

Also, has anyone tried Lactulose (I think that is how it is spelled)? My PM mentioned it to me the other day. This now makes the 3rd doc that doesn't want me to use Miralax. And don't ask me why I just don't know and need to ask them their reasonings. But anyway, just curious about the Lactulose. She wasn't too keen on Colace either. But those are the only two meds I have here at home.

Kathi, I don't know where else to go for her other than to take the Miralax twice a day. Lactulose is an osomotic [sp] laxative just as Miralax is. Both are non-stimulant laxatives that increase the water in the bowels softening the stool and causing more BMs. Lactulose is a sugar that isn't absorbed and may be different enough to work better than Miralax.

You can use miralax but not everyday. Because you'll be dehydrated if you use it everyday.
