Brain Connections
Danielle Schnupp
I hear the sound of water moving in my brain
Like a musical amplifier
And I have no button to adjust the volume!
It interferes with oncoming sounds
Like a one-way traffic;
No more place for extra words to come in
What is going on?
My sinuses are in a world of their own
Totally blocking further brain connections
My ear drums are sort of dancing
To the tempo of the new waves hitting the shore
My ship has no more direction
No one aboard to navigate in those deep waters
I feel like a recording artist making a soundtrack
Without the equipment
Splish, splash…
I should enjoy this intriguing cadence
But the flooding pressure (high tide) makes it unbearable.
I am at the beach and I can only hear the water.
But where is the water?
Can’t see it; can only hear it
Sound is so distorted:
Crowds, people, voices… It is so loud!
Cannot remember whatever anyone is saying
Why?
Loosing information rapidly
And, at times, my hearing is gone
What is happening to me?
Walking without balance, missing my normal steps,
Space is changing place.
Why?
Flashes of colors sometimes
Islands maybe, or guiding lights
If only someone could carry me
I must reach out to a safe Port
Splish, splash…
I am feeling so sleepy
Splish splash…
Please waves,
Keep me awake a little longer.

In 2000, I was diagnosed with Hydrocephalus n.p.h. I drove myself to the hospital, which looking back I would not recommend. I somehow felt the urgency at the time, and those flashes of colour were not islands, they were circulation traffic lights… red, green, yellow. Well, it turns out that Someone was looking out for me. Today I am blessed to use colours to express the beauty of each day. A palette and few brushes can make you travel within and discover another purpose. Every day brings a different scenery… we must pay attention to those fine details around us!
