Charcoal 19 x 26" Rives BFK paper

I did this piece from life, after an experience I had with my daughter Rebecca. She began having seizures in June '06. In October she lost her memory. She did not remember any of her history. She knew how to do things, such as read, or math, but she did not know how she learned them. I looked for psychological reasons that this would happen, but a neuro said that he believed that a seizure had triggered it. Two months later her memory came back, and yet she lost the two months + a week. It was scary, frustrating, odd to say the least.

I realized how we all put treasures in boxes on the shelf. Rarely do we take them out, but we do expect them to be there when we want to hold them. Our memories are wrapped up in these treasures. We base a lot of who we are on our memories, and being able to recall, and compare then to now.

My daughter had lost this. I drew her as the highlighted box on the top. She is being supported by her oldest brother, the third largest box, and her father , the second largest box. Her second brother is near ready to help, tucked in close, but reserved. I placed my box to the side with golden tissue outstretched in case she fell. Treasures are usually wrapped in tissue to keep them safe.

Some of this set up was not considered when making the placement of the objects. However, it became clear to me as I was doing the drawing that there was a clear purpose for each box, and they happened to tell the story perfectly. Synchronicity works that way. i am a firm believer that if we keep our hearts open to it, we are shown some powerful symbols.

I am currently working on a painting of the same image in oil, 36"x48".
I hope you enjoy this charcoal and my story.

It's beautiful. It's amazing how things turn out when we stand back and look at them. It all had it's place in your mind's eye. It may not have been apparent to you to start, but it was there all along.

I hope your daughter is doing better,

Linda
