we discussed mitochondria and autism since 2000 and hannah poling's case brings it back.

i was wondering if the situation my son found himself before and at birth affected his mitochondria and that's why vaccinations and psychiatric "meds" aggravated his "condition".

apparently mito and PDD are not rare combination, is suspected that up to 60% of those dx in the spectrum may have a metabolic or mito disorder.

i found a paper that mentioned a dr. kelley who lectured in a mitochondria interest group minisymposium march 2000. he has been discussing this relation for several years.

he said, quotation:

"the biochemical findings are most consistent with abnormal complex I activity. Moreover, when identified below the age of two years, affected children often respond to therapy designed to augment complex I activity. We propose that, like the basal ganglia, areas of the brain important in language development and personal social interaction are especially vulnerable in the first two years to injury mediated by defects of mitochondrial energy metabolism, and that early and careful evaluation of autistic children from these more subtle mitochondrial disturbances may rescue them from severe brain injury."

tests for mitochondrial disorders are not that expensive and its treatment in many cases are easy and affordable, mostly supplements and diet.
