Wally had emergency surgery yesterday. Had a twisted intestine. He had a pretty comfortable night. The next 3 days will tell if he makes it--it is a pretty serious situation.

Thank you, everyone, for your prayers and good wishes. It means so much to our family.
This afternoon he is comfortable and awake--listening to Bill Stillman's new book being read to him by his brother-in-law. If he can make it through Thursday he will probably be ok.

Thanks to each of you for your support and prayers--Wally is surrounded by them.
Today we were told he will be leaving the ICU and going to the pulmanory floor when a bed is available. For the most part he is comfortable--a little morphine now and then and tylenol suppositories.

After awhile I got to thinking about what was removed from Wally and if it would be helpful to those studying autism and gut problems. I called Wally's neuroligist and his friend Dan's gastroenterologist to see if they were interested. They are both going to get in touch with the pathology department. Hopefully Wally's ordeal will be helpful to others and maybe even himself.

Hello, Everybody--Wally was moved up to the pulmonaryfloor last night. He slept well and was smiling alot this AM. This afternoon he sat up in a chair--a little tired. My only concern is the food he will be getting for nutrition. Right now he is having Total Parental
Nutrition through an IV. The plan is to put him back on Osomolite which has a lot of soy and some gluten and dairy.

I will let you know if the doctors were able to use the specimen when I hear about it.

Take care all and thanks for all the support and prayers. Gay, Wally and Wally, Jr.

Saturday 4/12/08--Wally still improving slowly. He has been able to smile.
It is amazing how quickly an incision can heal.

Hi, Everybody--Good News--Wally's digestive system kicked in today. They removed the G-tube from his nose and the staples from his incision. They will start tube feeds again in the next day or two. Things are looking up for him.

Thank you all for your support and prayers. I copied them and took them to the hospital and read them to him. We cannot underestimate the power that prayer kind words have on our wellbeing.

God Bless Each of You--Gay, Wally's Mom

Tuesday update--Wally's system has kicked in and now we think it would be nice if it kicked off just a little. Finding nutrition that he can handle is the next goal.
Thanks everyone for your thoughts and prayers. The nurses and others who are helping Wally are very special people. I am preparing them for the future with the 1 in 166 autistic people. Even the surgeon--they have to figure out a way to help our children before they are 6' 4" and it is almost impossible.

Very well put Gay. Makes me want to cry, because you are absolutely correct.

Sending more prayers and checking daily to see your updates on Wally. You're such a wonderful mom, it's easy to see your loving and selfless nature in all your posts, easy to see where Wally gets his nature. How is he feeling today?

Wednesday update--Thank you for your kind words, Mili.

They put paragoric in Wally's predigested tube feed formula to slow down what is left of his small intestine. It seems to be working--I think the plan is that they can stop the paragoric after awhile. He seems to be tolerating the formula. They hope to send him home tomorrow or Friday. It is just amazing how quickly the human body can heal.
He still has his great smile. Of course Mom and Dad are still worried and vigilant.

Who knows, maybe he will be better off without the intestine they took out. I hope so.

Does he need some probiotics? I assume he's been on antibiotics.

I think he'll do well once he's home and under the watchful care of "Dr Mom." I'm so happy he's had such a good outcome.

You can tell him "Eleanor" had the exact same problems. ;) Vet had to come out twice to do clean outs and before too long, she was back to "baking cowpies" in the pasture. LOL

Thursday-update--Wally's GI system is slowing down--thanks for the report on Eleanor, Cally, gives us encouragement. He will have his gastric tube changed today or tomorrow morning (it has been in since November and I think they like to change them every once in a while). He remains cheerful. We are all taking turns reading to him and he likes seeing all the different people and hearing what they have to say. That has always been one of his favorite things--listening to people talk to each other--when people are talking to each other, nothing is expected of him and he doesn't get nervous.
It is a good way to impart information that he needs to know.

Hopefully home tomorrow. Gay

Friday update--Wally arrived home at 2:30 PM. It is wonderful to have him home.
We are hoping that his GI track will slow down some more so that he doesn't have a sore bottom. Probably a yeast thing from all the antibiotics. Cally, we are starting pro-biotics. Thank you for reminding us. I think the antibiotics were massive because of the nature of his surgery etc. At least the mucous in his lungs has cleared up too.
He is looking good despite all he has been through. He had wonderful care at the hospital. They allowed a family member to be there at all times.

Our thank you to each of you for your prayers and support. It was so appreciated.

Gay, Wally and Wally, Jr.

I had to laugh imagining Wally at our house, he'd have a ball, we are all such chatterboxes - Vince and I are particularly UNreciprocal when we speak (don't mean to be of course). Wally would leave here knowing more about weather, animals, and Barbie (if Carmen was home) than he ever wanted to, hee hee.

So glad he's home sweet home again with you and his dad. Home never feels right at all when someone is away.
