spellbinding video of a TED speech.
This woman is a brain researcher who had a (left hemisph hemmorhagic)stroke, then recovered. Her description of what that was like is fascinating and will resonate with many of us in regards to what we or our kids experience.
you need to set about 20 minutes aside to watch it. It's worth the time.

Hi Group,
We watched the Oprah show today with Wally.
Dr Taylor's description of how she viewed the world after her stroke sounds so much like what out autistic children must feel like as they look out on the world . Over the years the different things that Wally has written about his perseptions as a nonverbal autistic of "our world" parallel what Dr Taylor said about her experiences with her perception of the world after her stroke.
Mothers Heart, thanks for the TED link.

Hi Kristen-Coley's mom,
Wally watched the Oprah program yesterday with Gay and I. Every time Dr Taylor would make a comment about how she viewed the world and how her senses worked after her stroke, Wally would smile as if to say, "Boy, I'm glad that someone can tell the world what our perceptions are really like even though she is not autistic." When we read the book last spring, Gay sent Dr Taylor an E-mail telling her that her experiences mirrored what Wally had been telling us ever since he could communicate. Dr Taylor e-mailed back and said that she really felt as she immagined an autistic person feels all of the time.
Wally will watch the video link in a day or so. We have to be careful that he is not exposed to too much TV or computer screen flicker each day because these are seizure triggers for him. His laptop, which has the newer type screen that does not flicker as much as our older HP, is not hooked to the internet so he has to watch the video clip on the HP.

WOW! It's just fascinating how the mind works, or 'reacts when it's not working properly(?).
I'm still a little unsure as to whether autism is a 'break' or just the 'symptoms' of a break, ya know?
I truely believe your body knows how to spell out a problem...I think the breaksdown is in interpreting that, ya know?
Anyhoo...I understand that Wally has his limits, and by no means do I mean to apply pressure, but I am always so inlightened by his insights, and really can't wait to read his thoughts on this...
I'd love a neurologists thoughts on the similarities too!
Did Oprah have any 'experts' on the show to parrallel the Drs accounts? I wish I could have seen it, but we had our parenting clas last night
