Have been having problems for 15 months now. Recentlty the Neuro DR ordered some blood tests. I just had a muscle biopsy done on my left calf. Myopothy-or PN was probable. The tests were Carnitine which came back low and Pyruvate which also came back very low. I feel like &^%$#. Awaiting his call. Any thoughts on theses tests??? Thank You

I think you might want to read up on mitochondrial disorders, or just wait until your doctor talks to you in more details about what all the tests add up to.

If you want to learn about them, here's a website to start with:

http://www.mdausa.org/publications/Quest/q65mito.html

But I believe that mitochondrial disorders is the category into which you are going to fit, from what you say here about pyruvate and carnitine levels.

Good luck.

Myopathy, PN , low carnitine and feeling like &^%$# can go with Celiac Disease. I have no idea about low pyruvate. You might want to check out The Gluten File linked below regarding the neurological manifestations of gluten sensitivity. Might be a long shot, but perhaps worth considering as I have known a couple people ultimately dx'd w/celiac when carnitine deficiency was flagged and baffling.

Can you give a teeny bit more background about diagnoses, symptoms, and treatments so far? None/to most of us aren't medico's, but we have all been thru the medical 'food processor' to different degrees. Some for months, years and decades.

Also, meds cause actions/reactions and test results can depend on when you take WHAT. Vitamins, supplements AND meds. It is a squirrelley world we live in when you have to STOP some intake to really get the answers you need.

Soo, some extra details please? Good thoughts and pain free moments [even a few...]!! - j
