View Full Version : Last night was a doozy

Last night seemed normal enough until about 1am.
I would have expected to be getting drowsy from Ambien around midnight, then taking my 3 other meds, and then going to sleep.
Instead, from about 11:45 until 2:30 I developed one of the most severe migraines I have ever had.
I could not stop vomiting and my head was throbbing in excruciating pain.
I called the nurse hotline at my HMO twice and had to hang up with them due to the vomiting.
I couldn't hold any of my meds down.
They told me to go into the ER and luckily I caught a friend who was coming home from a night out on the town around 2:30am.
I ended up staying in the ER from 3am until 5am with an IV of saline and several medications.
I got back home and into bed around 5:30am and the drugs they gave me made me very tired so I quickly fell asleep and slept till noon today.
But due to all the vomiting last night I could not take my pain meds, so I have been feeling horrible all day.
Anyway, it was disturbing to me to realize how bad a migraine can get. I have vomited before but nothing like this. I didn't want to to go the ER - but I am glad I went - the drugs they gave really helped.
I am just glad the whole ordeal is over now. It was miserable.
And I am sure I will feel even more miserable when I get the ER bill!!!!

GG, I am so sorry. I had my first trip to the ER for the same and yes it is awful. You hear people talk about it and while I have suffered from many migraines you just don't quite understand until you wind up in the same position. The funny part is that while my insurance covered the ER bill they would not cover the bill for the ER clinic that I went to first that wanted to send me to the hospital by ambulance. So on with the fight tomorrow.
I am glad you got some relief and feel better now. Hopefully it won't happen again.

GG,
I hope you are much better today. I KNOW it is miserable. :( Hopefully, one of the meds they gave you was some kick butt Toradol. :) And Christina is right...I had Occipital Neuralgia WITH what the docs called Variant Migraines. And, yep, went many, many times to the ER to get it to stop. But everyone has already heard my stories about that. I also hope you have some Phenergan on hand or something similar. I used to take Phenergan quite a bit just to keep from throwing up long enough to get to the ER. Or, the ER would give it to me as well. And you are right...I would spend that day and the next just sleeping. Bless your heart. As Christina said nobody really knows what it is like until it hits and hits hard. Please post back when you are feeling better. Hugs.

GG, what a terrible thing to go through. I hope today hasn't been too bad as you try to recover from last night. It is good you caught your friend coming in and were able to go to the ER.

Thanks friends - I am feeling back to my normal self today --
I got some phenergan suppositories so next time I am sure that will knock it down so I can avoid the ER.
Kathy- they did give me some Toradol - but it didn't do much for me!
The zofran + promethazine is what really did the job.
Anyway - glad its over. back to normal CP land. ;)

GG,
Glad to hear you are doing better. :)
And also glad you were able to get some suppositories too. They work and work fast. I am a bit surprised the Toradol didn't help much but I also know Phenergan often helped with headaches along with the nausea too which surprised me at first. In any case, glad to you are feeling better. :)

Okay, you guys, what is up with Toradol? LOL
MAYBE it worked well for me because the headaches were coming from my spine, as in inflammation, nerve roots...whatever. But that combined with Phenergan would kick those headaches out. Of course it took about 20-30 minutes for it to work but boy it worked well.

I don't have a problem with Toradol, my body does!! I cant take the oral Ultram it makes my tummy bleed.
The shot doesn't do anything because I have taken so many different narcotics, I really wish I could take any form of NSAIDS as I think I could benefit from the anti-inflamatories. I have a crazy body!!

Kathy,
I hear ya! Toradol doesn't bother me. BUT...it was usually just a shot. I asked them once if they made that in pill form and they do. But, and if I remember right, they said you can't even take the pill form for very long...I think they said 10 days or less without it ripping up your stomach. Sorry, but I AM VERY lost in space this morning. I just remember them vaguely saying something to that effect.
Anyway, I have tried Celebrex, Viox, Arthrotec, Mobic, Bextra, Ibuprofen and Motrin. Is that enough yet? LOL ALL made me so sick and dizzy. The very weird thing is Voltaren or Diclofenac which is supposed to be hard on the tummy didn't bother me as much as those others. But I don't or didn't take every day either and I think the bottle I have in there is for 75mg.
But you have a very good point. If I could take these with ease, I would!!! My NS got onto me one time because I wasn't taking the oral anti-inflammatories. I felt like saying, "Dude, YOU are the one that said NO anti-inflammatories while fusing!" But I didn't say that LOL! I was a lot more diplomatic than that. But then he explained I COULD after a certain amount of time but that was not explained to me early on so I just didn't take any.:)

I have only had two NSAIDs that really work for me - Bextra helped my joint pain a lot but I had an allergic reaction to it -
I have been taking Indomethacin 75mg ER for about 2 years now - I take it before I go to sleep at night because it makes me so drowsy and dizzy.
But if I miss a dose- wow I feel it the next day. The pain levels in my body go from a 3 to a 7 without that drug in my system.
None of the others have done anything for me- like taking sugar pills or something.
