I too would like to know if the old data will be restored. Would love to be able to access it even if it were in a read only format. I spend too much time looking for cached info on Google - most of the time I come up empty :(
If it can't be restored, let us know so we can rebuild.

I had a chance to talk to John yesterday.
The old vB database seems to be intact. There are plans to make it into a read only forum. I don't know exactly when at the moment however.
John's not going to be "home" until Sun or Mon. Once he gets home hopefully we'll have more specifics to pass out.

Until the Database is revived, You Can access old posts--though clumsily. One is contributed by me,Linnie, and the other by bezara.
Linnie's method:
1. go to http://www.google.com (google.com)
2. Let's say for this example only, that you're looking for old posts that contain the word walk
Enter "walk"site:brain.hastypastry.net
Remember to surround the word walk with quotations. There are no spaces in your search. Remember also that brain.hastypasty.net is a .net and not a .com
3.Click on the Google Search button
4.Your search will find several different things. Make certain you Click on the word Cached at the bottom left of each discovery Not the title of the discovery itself.This will lead you to Cached posts. You can scroll through them, copy them, and put them into a new post though you can't answer the cached posts.
Hint: you can even look for your own, or someone else's old posts this way: Try, for example "linniec"site:brain.hastypastry.net If you get a line of page numbers, like 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 Next , you must click on the word Next to get to the posting

Yet another wait.
But, what is the thoguhts on use of the psoted information. IOF someone is looking for example information on long term disability and while receiving SSDI benefits, can we link or copy the public information. Is their an implied ownership by BT, or the author?
I was once told when it is posted in cyberspacce it is free when we had a party logging all our post and caching them every day....
Just don't want Fed's at my door, I if I repost some helpful tips again!

Not everything is on Google. I cannot find some things. They were just not
cached.
Not everything is on Wayback either... and Wayback is incredibly slow.
It can take you 1/2 hr to check perhaps 5 or 6 things. Some are archived and others not, inexplicably.
I have found myself, and saved some things over the past months, ..but others, less frequent postings or further down the alphabet, are not there.

Would it be possible for the admins to make a simple list of suggested Do's & Don'ts for when the data is back?
To avoid any problems ahead of time - a list and/or discussion ahead of time would be a good idea.
topics can include-
Linking to the data?
copying your own posts?
copying with permission of the original poster?

I really don't recall agreeing to THAT per-se...But, I can see the pros-and cons...Concerns are as follows and may decide the future life of BT as a community and a future entitiy... I used to work in copyright law and understand how squirrelley it can be..
So, lemee get this right...ANYTHING I post here or elsewhere is BT/YOUR Property and cannot be cited elsewhere?
Say, Should I wish to extrapolate my postings and incorporate them in some published format - I WOULD have to get BT's Permission?
What about instances in which I have been quoted 'out of context' but in part, the extrapolations have been posted as another's original thoughts on another board--how does this all apply? Then WHO how do I raise the issue to since there's been little response to multiple issues HERE to date? If ANY.
Further, this implies that ANY and ALL alternative reference sites I cite here become BT's 'reference properties'?????
It was my understanding that BT was w/in limitations a rather free and outgoing, giving set up. From what you are implying, apparently not. What it COULD imply, is that BT could be used for a variety of medical and life--style purposes, that I believe are in contradiction to it's initial primary mission statements.. Maybe I missed the parts about amendments?

This is a little off the direction the thread is going. But I am looking forward to the reposting of the data base. Printing out information from that would be the only chance I would have to appeal Medicare's decision regarding a successful medication for me(They would not pay).
Thanks to Linnie for the method:) . It looks challenging but doable, provided I follow instructions for a change:p . Perhaps the database will be restored first.

I tried to find some archives of vBulletin on WayBack.
That was quite the adventure. WayBack archives has the INDEX...but nothing
else. If you click on the index for old dates, you get modern posts, shuffled
a bit as well. It appears that WayBack "links" sometimes...so the links are
"corrupted"?
Also some of my cached posts on Google have disappeared as well.
It is all very confusing!:( :confused:

John and I did discuss the archived database tuesday evening during our meeting. This weekend will be devoted to updating the forums software, adding the old chat graphics, removing the ones that can be triggers, and checking out a new "toy" that I hope to get him to install here :)
The updating takes priority over everything as there are security issues that need to be fixed.
Next tuesday providing the update goes well, we will discuss the archives in greater detail :)

I suppose if the process will consist of a straight restore implementing a “read only” database separate from the current forums, then some of my questions regarding “potential interaction problems” may no longer be applicable.

There won't be any interaction problems as the pre-crash database will be read only and seperate from the current forums.
There is no eta at this point in time. Other things need to be done prior *see my post here from yesterday*.
I believe I have been giving periodic updates (just not in that thread).
I've been leaving it open ended on purpose because I don't have any definate information yet.

The software update wasn't done over the last weekend. John is hoping to get it done during the holiday week.

Unfortunately there isn't anything new to report on getting the archives online. It's all up to John at this point all I can do is bring it up everytime I see him.

--that you at least see John from time to time. On some other boards/discussion groups, rumors sometimes surface that he has vanished to the four winds.
Perhaps the better question is--does he seem at all intetested in attempting a database recovery? Or, s he really all that interested in heavy involvement with Braintalk at all at this point?

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the update. Everyone is greatly appreciative for all you do and we understand there are limits to what you can do being 3000 miles away from the server. Do you think JL would agree to move the server from Boston to where you are (in CA)? I realize this would be a major undertaking, but the perception is that important tasks (such as restoring the archives) continue to be dependent on one person and that one person no longer has the time to provide support. This would of course mean additional responsibility for you as well, with server upkeep.
Thanks again for all you do. You have provided a great boost in support since becoming an administrator. :)

I bet it will be restored at some point this year, exactly when is anyone's guess though. John knows how important the archives are to people so I am sure he's just busy with other things at the moment. Hopefully we'll see a Archive board set up soon. Meaning in a couple of months, I hope. :)

Sounds to me like John wants to past to stay buried. Considering the pattern of harassment and abuse by the former leadership, who could blame him.
