Hi,
I am 57 years old and have been taking Dilantin for 41 years. I took it during my pregnancies with both sons. They are both healthy, mentally and physically fine. My concern is that the Dilantin that I took during my pregnancies may have caused gene defects in my two sons.
Five years ago, my oldest son and his wife were blessed with a beautiful little boy who has Diastrophic Dysplasia. Three years later, they had a darling little girl with the same form of dwarfism. Both children have a mild variant of DD but they are definitely Little People. Even though they have "physical" handicaps- they are mentally normal (superb as far as grandma is concerned).
Just about a week ago, we found out that our youngest son's baby (due in June) also has dwarfism. They can not be sure what kind of dwarfism until the birth and genetic testing is done on both father and mother.
From all that I have read regarding dwarfism, I do not believe this can be a coincidence that two brothers who are not dwarfs could father children with dwarfism.
Neither my husband or I have dwarfism. There are no other incidences of dwarfism in either families.
Have there been any studies done been done about Dilantin causing such types of gene defects? Also has anyone on the forum experienced anything similiar to my experiences?
Thanks for your help,
faye
