I now how some people say they get constipated by narcotics so I thought I might be able to help some of you. I have RLS really bad some nights. My pharmacist told me to try taking Iron 65mg or (325mg Ferrous Sulfate) tablets which is the same thing. She told me her husband uses this and it helps some. She told me it really messes up his stomach though. I am trying it but it really messes up my stomach also. This is something you may want to try if you have RLS or constipated. Trust me you wont be constipated long.

Brian, I have another solution for constipation but I wouldn't wish it on anyone. The flu cured my constipation for several weeks:D. Sorry, your title just made me think of the one good thing that come of my case of the flu.

I am surprised that the iron works that way since it can be constipating for many people. I hope some get relief from your suggestion and I am glad it works for you.

I am surprised too. But what I wanted to say...I CANNOT take any iron at all due to a total hysterectomy. And it is advised for any woman that has lost her uterus...don't take it!!! There are reasons for that. And I just wanted to add that because there are some women here that have had hysterectomies.

Mark,

Ditto on the flu or the bug I had!

And, just to make it more complicated... I take a high dose of iron for treatment-resistant iron-deficiency anemia (very low ferritin level that won't budge, even with max doses of different iron supplements)... and, for me, the iron adds to my constipation. It can be pretty constipating for a lot of people... but, as this post shows, other people seem to have the opposite effect... just goes to show how different our bodies can be from one another...

Ryan, I am happy that works for you. I have the complete opposite response.
Kathi, can you explain why we are not supposed to take iron? You can pm me if you like. I am very curious, I have never been told not to.
Kira, I wish you the best.

Keeping everyone in my thoughts,
Kathy

Kathy,

The way my RE explained it was that since the uterus is gone of course we are no longer bleeding and there can be a buildup of too much iron...causing toxicity. Something along those lines anyway. She just said that if I were to get Vitamins to get them without iron. Then again, if a person is anemic or something it may be a whole different story. I haven't had any problems with iron in the last 8 years so I I guess I am getting it from the foods and THAT is okay. Maybe someone will come along that can explain it better than I can. It was just that my RE said...no iron supplements.

Rozia,
I wonder if you've tried brown vinegar?
I take one teaspoon of brown vinegar every day - in water, juice or in mashed vegetables - or straight off the spoon.
My research in the encyclopaedia found that vinegar helps to stimulate the saliva glands - and digestion starts with a good saliva flow.
Vinegar also helps aid the muscle action of the intestines.
A friend also used vinegar to help her diarrhoea, so it's seems to be a pretty good all rounder.
When I had real bad constipation, I took the vinegar twice a day, once in the morning and once at night, but usually the dose at my night time meal was sufficient - and "worked" wonders.

Rozia,

The gastro doc told me the same thing...should help.

Ainee,

I never thought about vinegar but I recall now I have read that somewhere before.

I am normally a Miralax-type of girl - works great for me.

But, I found something else that works too - OTC Prilosec.

It also gives me gas too, so I've stopped for now, but while on it, I don't have to take any Miralax.

dont eat CHEESE!
that means pizza, althought pizza with no cheese is really very good, has about 1/2 the calories too,
cheese burgers, cheese sauce, cheesy nachos, grill cheese sands, cheese soup, cheese and dairy products are one of the major causes of IBS!

keep a diary you might see a pattern.
