well, when mom was admitted to the hospital they found an infection in her blood and treated with antibiotics for 3 days. Now her wbc count is going up again and her mental status worse. Could this be a shunt infection? They are going to adjust the shunt tomorrow but I am thinking they need to get some csf and send it out to see if theres infection. Any ideas? Could a blockage lead to an infection, this has been progressing for about 3 weeks.

I'm sorry to hear this! Your mom should have a shunt tap to culture the fluid and check for infectious bacteria. She should also be watched for any swelling of the shunt tract, fever, headaches, seizures, and lethargy.

Thank you Lizard! Thats what I thought too and I did suggest it, hopefully it will get done. They did adjust her shunt today and usually with her you can tell a difference pretty quickly. I'm sooooooo ready to get off of this rollercoaster and just cruise along happily.
