View Full Version : Tegretol is an Anti-Diuretic?

I read somewhere that Tegretol was an anti-diuretic. I'd never heard that term before. Does anyone know if that is true and what an anti-diuretic would do to your body? It sounds as if you would retain fluids. Of course, that would not be good for certain conditions. Everyone knows what a diuretic is and does, but I'd never considered that there would be meds that did the opposite. Would retaining water help the Tegretol to work properly, somehow? Thanks for any information.

Hi Sebrena,
There are some medications that increase the loss of minerals from the body, like sodium and magnesium. Tegretol is designed not to do that as much as some others according to my DH's doctor.

I hadn't heard this, but I don't doubt it. I gained 50 lbs in 2 years on Tegretol, it cost me $50 a month, and here's the kicker: it didn't do a dang thing to control my E!  I also noticed my feet blew up like balloons, so it makes sense that it would result in water retention. Sad to say, that was the very least of my problems with it. :(
LIZARD, so glad I'll never take it again!

anti-diuretic, yeah- great....
I take a diuretic now (hoping that it helps). I wonder how (if) all those years of extra fluid has effected my heart.

Thank you for your replies. I have my annual appointment with my Epileptologist at the end of this month. I'll check with him also. I guess if it hasn't killed me yet (after 25+ years) I shouldn't be concerned. But, if I ever need to take a diuretic (as you do Kathrine), with heart trouble in my family, it would be good to know if the Tegretol is negating that. Thanks again for your responses.

At it's worst, this side effect results in SIADH - syndrome of inappropriate anti-diuretic hormone.
You can google tegeretol or carbamazepine and SIADH.
As you pointed out - some people are at much greater risk of having problems from this due to their other medical issues. I once read a researcher recommending those on tegretol not only have teg levels checked, but also sodium levels, but I have never seen that again and I think most docs would consider that an overboard level of concern (unless maybe you were in one of these high risk groups?)
I like this article because it outlines clearly who some of those risk groups are - it's on a parkinsons' drug base:
The P-I-E-N-O Parkinsn's List Drug Database - carbamazepine (http://www.parkinsons-information-exchange-network-online.com/drugdb/027.html)

What other medicines can interact with carbamazepine?
barbiturate medicines for inducing sleep or treating seizures (convulsions)
cimetidine
clarithromycin
cyclosporine
dacarbazine
danazol
doxycycline
erythromycin
female hormones, including contraceptive pills
fluvoxamine
influenza virus vaccine
isoniazid, INH
levothyroxine
medicines for angina or high blood pressure
medicines for mental depression
medicines for mental problems and psychotic disturbances
pimozide
propoxyphene
quinidine
seizure (convulsion) or epilepsy medicine
steroid medicines such as prednisone or cortisone
terfenadine
theophylline
troleandomycin
warfarin
Tegretol interacts with the flu shot? I've never heard this before.
Does anybody know anything about this?
I've had the flu shot the past few years- the doctor knows that I take tegretol.

Kathrine, what's wrong? I'm not on Tegretol anymore, thank God; it didn't treat me well, but why are you upset?
LIZARD, just curious

i wish i could help kathrine.
my child doesn't get flu shots.
he was only on tegretol for a month, and his response to it was increasingly poor. when i went to read about it i was struck by my reading about it's anti-diurectic properties, and by how confused, almost delerious my son seemed by the time we stopped it.
but i have nothing to share about the flu shot - did the doc respond?

DH is on Tegretol and had his flu shot yesterday. I asked the doc and she wasn't aware of any problems. He's had flu shots every year for the last 20 years or so...she feels he's in such danger from the flu that there is no question of the need and I agree.

Thank you for your replies.
Fireweed, Thank you for the interesting and comprehensive article on Tegretol. I was surprised that it actually mentioned the anti-diuretic effects. I read and then book-marked it for future reference.
Kathrine, I have had a flu shot every year for about 10 years with no negative consequences...as far as I know. But I've always worried, to some degree, about taking any other medication/immunization.
Thanks again....Sebrena
