View Full Version : Troubles with chat...

Lately, we've been having quite a few troubles with chat. It often lags after we type, takes almost a minute for it to show up, and sometimes what we type doesn't show.
I signed on this evening, and was booted off twice within 8 minutes. The 2 others that are on w/me, also have been booted off.
This has been happening more often since the recent update was done.
If it continues, we'll probably start using Mike's Temporary chat again, until the site chat starts working better.

Michelle's right, chat has been acting up badly. The lagging seems to get worse every day, and now it has started booting us off. I enjoy chat, but lately it has been a real pain to try to use.

The FlashChat rooms are in very bad shape.
People (including moderators) keep getting booted off.
You type something, then sometimes there is a lag and you think it isn't going to show up.
Then other times it shows up right away.
It is very frustrating to try to chat under those conditions. New people get discouraged and leave.
We are losing our chatters rapidly.
PLEASE HELP US!!!!

chat moderator #1, I believe chat is in trouble too. I go there & often get booted, like you say. I want to talk too but most all day no one even wants to come it seems because they think there will be no one there & their probably right. No one wants to go to a room that boots them & lags once you send a message.
Yes, the room needs help!!!!!

How do you get in to chat and let people know you are there
jess, See "Quick Links" up there by "Log Out"? Go to Quick Links then on there go down to Flash Chat & click

I prefer using http://brain.hastypastry.net/forums/chat/flashchat.php rather than the Quick Link, because the chatroom will be a full page, and it's a better view.
If anyone has been having any troubles w/the chatroom lately, please post about them on this thread.

I think there could be a whole better way of having this forum...there should also be an instant chat for each of the topics! that is soo much easier then having to post private messages and more instand and personal.....could this be a possibility?? just asking....

Hooptedoodle is the main chatroom, and that's the first room you're in when you sign on. It has been the busiest room since the site returned in '06.
If more people were to use chat, to keep in touch with people on the forums they post on, there would be more rooms added. It's not necessary to add a room for each forum, if the rooms aren't going to be used regularly.
Thirteen of our forums have their own chatroom right now. Five of them were added since the site returned in '06, after ten people replied on a thread asking for a new room. The new rooms haven't been used very often since they were added.
Here's the list of forums that have a chatroom...
Alzheimer's Disease
Aneurysm
Autism
Child Neurology
Depression
Epilepsy
Hydrocephalus
Multiple Sclerosis
Parkinson's Disease
Peripheral Neuropathy
Thoracic Outlet
Tourette Syndrome
Trigeminal Neuralgia
To get to the other rooms from Hooptedoodle, you click on the arrows at the top, scroll down and click on the room you want. Another way to get to them, is to type /join and the name of the room you'd like to use. For example... if you'd like to reach the Aneurysm room, type "/join Aneurysm" without the parentheses.

We'd appreciate feedback, about any troubles, people have been having with chat lately.
Feel free to tell us if you've been getting booted off, or how much it's been lagging when you're on.
I noticed that there weren't many people on this weekend. :( It would be nice to see a full chatroom again.

Thank you Chat Moderator #5, that is a very good explanation and listing of the chat rooms. :)
We have all those separate chat rooms because 10 people posted on the forums saying they would use a chat room for that neurological problem. And those people can't even use those rooms if they wanted to right now.
Either people get booted out and get discouraged and leave or the posts are so slow in showing up, it is discouraging also.
Sometimes the posts don't show up at all. :(
I have been here for 10 years at BrainTalk when it was at MGH, and we had the classic forums and classic chats rooms, the Advanced Chat rooms, and when they died we had vbchat, which was a lot of fun with graphics.
And now we have FlashChat. I have been told that we need a newer version of FlashChat. I know nothing about computers or the sytem.
But I do know that we are in desparate need of help right now.
Please help us John. *yona
Sincerely and thanks,

IMO, if John cared if people used chat or not he would follow through on the promises he makes to fix it.
From having my own websites over the years I know how much interest and care is given to a new project. Then over time interest wanes in it. The difference is that mine were self-sufficient and once they were up didn't need constant care. This sites needs more or less constant upkeep. If that's not possible it should be turned over to someone who has an interest in seeing things are updated on a regular basis. But this is just my opinion.
I know the mods feel bad about telling people about how chat going to be updated and then months go by with people trying to use it in the condition it's in now, and that's not just my opinion. People are now going to other sites to chat. How long will it be before they abandon BT all together?
I do hate to sound negative, I've been coming to BT since Classic Chat, but there comes a point you have to face the facts.
I think alot of ppl are abandoning flashchat because there is often no ppl in it or just one. Not like even awhile ago. Whenever I was home alone I would often enjoy talking to my 'computer friends'.
BTW friends, a Beatles song reminds me of you .... "With A Little Help from My Friends"
BrainTalk has always been my favorite place to chat. I've been to a lot of different places over the years, including my own rooms, but have never found anywhere that had such nice and caring people. The mods make a big difference too. In some places, Yahoo chat rooms for instance, they do nothing but argue and insult each other all night and day. I can get along there but it's nothing like the friendly atmosphere of BT. I wish things could go back to the way they used to be but when you get booted 3-4 times within a half hour or you keep sending the same message twice because you think it hasn't shown up because of lag it takes the fun out of it and Yahoo doesn't seem so bad. After being booted several times I just don't log in again and find something else to do.
Until FlashChat is updated the good old days will only remain a memory, more remote and unlikely to ever return as time passes.
Hello All,
I have not been on this site for sometime and was shocked to find no one in the chatroom, it used to always have someone there day and night.
So is it the fact that the chatrooms are not working or have people just moved on to other places?
Hoping to chat to someone soon
San

Being critical of management can result in a warning.
Seems that the length of downtime speaks for itself
