I have this weird problem that is affecting my life in a huge way and I don't know what it is. Sometimes when I'm talking to someone (usually someone who I feel is more intellectual than me or someone I'm afraid of making a mistake in front of) my mouth starts to frown, like I'm going to cry or something. I don't feel sad or anything, but my face goes through all the physical attributes associated with someone who is about to cry. Also my lower lip and jaw will sometimes tremor a little. It also occurs when I'm in a debate about something or when I'm excited or in front of a group of people (including relatives). It's very weird and embarassing and has led to me having to leave a conversation prematurely for some made up reason. I'm 29 years old and this problem is affecting my ability to conduct myself in a professional manner. Does anyone have any idea what this is? Thank you.

First let me welcome you to BT. I no longer deal with the public a great deal, however when I was younger & had to make speeches in front of strangers or a crowd I'd get so nervous my voice would shake, very embarrassing! One day a co-worker gave me some Valium, that helped alot. So I'd say it's just nerves.....social anxiety. If this is having an adverse affect on your social life or career, you might consider asking your doctor for some anti-anxiety drugs. Worth a try I'd think.

Good luck! Buttons

Does Valium require a prescription? And will it prevent the muscles in my face from acting up?
