Thats a pretty strong drug...Be careful with it.They were going to give me that when I had severe headaches..They got better so I decided against it.

I did take a LOT of it for a LONG time -- 4x a day for a couple of years. I switched to MSContin, then, and for a while after that took Oxycontin. Then I switched to methadone, which also works for pain -- though I also have an Rx for dilaudid for the days when methadone just won't take care of the pain adequately (and there are some).

I am dealing with MS pain, as well as chronic back problems from a car wreck (3 surgeries there), and fibromyalgia -- I've also had hip surgery on my right hip 5 times and surgery on my right knee 4 times (and need it again). Dang! I am falling apart and not yet 46... Oh well. Pasting the bits back together seems to work moderately well, and the drugs seem to help reasonably well, and I'm doing OK. What more can I ask for? ;)

I hope the demerol helps you -- just be careful until you know how it affects you, especially if you drive, etc.!

It is the only thing I can take because of Porphyria. Narcotics are the safest pain killers for porph, and most others are forbidden. Neurontin is allowed, but gives me severe nightmares. However, I've been able to keep the dose small, usually l2 l/2 mg a day, occasionally 25 mg, and not every day....usually about half the time or less. Sometimes the pain recedes enough so I forget to take it for three or four days, so it seems I am not addicted.

I'm blessed that I don't have to take more. But some pains are little helped by it, such as the various joint exacerbations from my accidents this winter, especially tripping on the rug in the supermarket entry, which hurt my shoulder and knees. It mainly helps muscle pain, such as spasticity, and that it helps a lot.

I hope it works well for you Abby. I'm allergic to it, can't have it ever again!

I take Demerol for pain. My foot surgeon prescribes it because HE knows how tolerant I am to pain meds. He did my foot surgery a few years ago and THEN post op I was taking Fetynal (?) patches AND demerol I think together just to help the pain. I've had so many surgeries that my body and pain over ride the pain meds. I HARDLY take it unless I really need it. BUT right now I take 100 mgs of Demerol and it hardly affects me. It takes the EDGE off the my backpain and yet I can still function during the day. It doesnt knock me out (I wish at times). It does give me a little fogginess but not knock me out. I still have to make it thru the day being a single parent. My new primary care doctor almost had a heart attack herself when she found out what I take for pain. YET Neurontin and Lyrica make me loopy. Lyrica I was walking into the walls (even more than I already do with my balance issues :p )

BUT like I said I dont take it unless I HAVE TO which isnt as much as I would like to.

Yes, Abby, it can cause more reaction if you are somewhat low in blood sugar, i.e., need to eat. I have never had it cause gastric pain, though....just that on edge feeling.
