View Full Version : chelsea is in the ICU

hey everyone i know i hardly ever post anymore........ but chelsea had her hip plates removed (finally), her hamstrings lengthened, and her achilles tendons lenthened. *sigh*
that was wednesday, she still has not awoke from being under anesthsia (sp?) the doctors have NO IDEA what is going on with her, she has tested negative for everything including RSV, they checked her shunt, they checked her baclofen pump, they r having neurology do an EEG tomorrow.
im so scared that this is the end of the road for chelsea, i know i know think positivly.......right?
she is swolen from head to toe, she is making no effort to breathe over her vent, she is virtually unresponsive, and she is not holding her body temperature without the bear hugger.
i need lots of prayers that she will come back to us.
to top it all off i told them that she has a hard time coming off anestesia (sp?) they put her in the ICU observed her for 24 hours and chucked us down to a regular room, the next morning ten am she codes:eek:
they then move her back to the ER because there are no beds available for her, and now they have put her in the burn unit, not to worry i have already went psycho on the patient advocate.
i just want her to come back to me.
im at a total loss and have been crying non stop since friday.
any encouraging words?

I will be praying for Chelsea.. I hate when doctors THINK they know more than we do about our kids. I will be storming heaven for BOTH of you. I will earnestly pray she wakes up and that they can find out WHY she isnt waking up. Thats ridiculous they see the seriousness of this and still dont have her up in ICU.
HUGS,

OOOHHH, the poor sweetie! Was this surgery longer than her hip surgery? I wonder what all the swelling is about. She sounds tuckered out. I hope they are able to get you back in the ICU. Did she wake and then crash? Or hasn't come around yet at all? Did they intubate her during surgery or after when she 'crashed' as you say? Sorry for all the questions-just the nurse in me i guess. Maybe they need to do a brain MRI.....Fingers crossed she picks up strength in the next day or so to fight the anesthesia!!

I will be praying for Chelsea also. I know your worries, fears, and sadness right now. And please know if you need anything at all, just ask. Chelsea sounds alot like my Amanda and I hope that she is getting better quietly in her own body inside. Know what I mean?
Im sure the swollen is from all the fluids they are pumping into her per iv or central line. Amanda was very swollen. Do you know how long she coded for? Please know I am only asking out of love. I will be asking my little butterfly angel to keep vigiliance over your darling daughter. And to stay by her side during all of her hard time.
Just keep the faith and hope alive. Dont give up and fight. Thats the main thing. And talk to her. Touch her. Let her know you are right there with her. I am convinced Amanda could hear us.
HUGS AND PRAYERS FOR YOUR WHOLE FAMILY.

I'm glad you shared with us about all Chelsea is going through. Hopefully the prayers and well wishes will help strengthen her and that she will fully recover quickly. Hopefully too her body is using this time to recover from the surgeries so that when she awakes she will bounce back quicker than expected. With love and prayers we wish the best to your family...

she still has not awoke she is unresponsive to pain or any other sort of stimuli
i need to clarify a few things............ the surgery took 3 hours, she was awake and seemed well for the first 12-24 hours. and then she crashed or coded however u want to put it, and she has not awoke since that time.
they are putting in a PIC line this afternoon. on a positive note she is now recieving feeds even though they are continuous and at a very minimal rate but i guess that is sorta good news.
she has not recieved anything by way of narcotics since thursday night, and friday they gave her narcan (sp?) to reverse any opiotes in her system, to no avail. the doctors are scratching their heads.
i appreciate everyones thoughts and prayers, i dont think i have ever felt so alone.
give your little ones huge hugs from chelsea and i for our lifes are so precious and we all know for kiddos like these they are even more precious and unfortunately we have all walked this road before. i dont believe she is gone, but i just wish i knew why she was so unresponsive. and also i want to clarify she is recieving the same 1 on 1 nursing and care that she would in the ICU i guess the burn unit takes care of the ICU overflow.
i dont know about anywhere else but in indiana the hospitals are FULL and they are only accepting critical patients, everyone else is being diverted to outlying hospitals, due to RSV, and the flu mostly.

I am so sorry to hear what you are all going through! I will be praying for your sweet little girl to fully recover. I will also be praying for your family to have the strength to carry on and stay strong for her during this difficult time. I cant imagine what you are going through. I will pray that the doctors have the guidance to figure out what is wrong and be able to help her. I am a nurse and I believe strongly that sometimes God uses medicine to heal, otherwise I wouldnt have entered the medical profession. So I will be praying that the doctors let God guide them to the answers they need to help your precious little girl. Again I am so sorry, stay strong and remember where your strength comes from. Wishing you Love and Peace, Vonnie

dear leah,
i don't know if this is helpful at all, but we thought of two things when thinking of chelsea this evening.
did she have an epidural for pain? the meds in the epidural can cause major problems, even though they are in the spine. (12 hours post femoral osteotomies my son went into cns depression as the epidural was turned on. he was not unresponsive, but it did last a few days after the epidural was pulled and i would believe as a mom that the epidural meds could cause that level of response).
also - on an outside chance i was wondering if they did anything at all to the pump that might have caused a bolus - anything that might have required refilling the tubing? (my son was unresponsive 12 hours after a surgery because of the anesthesia effect combined with the bolus used to fill the tubing. he was unresponsive even to pain, not nearly for this long though....it is just a thought. the pump is always a thought imho.)
i'm sure the docs have thought of all that and more, but on the chance they are not looking for the really atypical response, i thought i'd mention those ideas.
we're thinking of you.

Keeping you and Chelsea in our prayers - Two years ago Chase was in ICU - totally unresponsive - on the vent - at the edge - and I was wondering the same things you are. But he got better - and he's doing great. Miracles can and do happen - the ulitmate healer nows exactly what Chelsea needs - Prayers for strength, guidance and REST for you.

updates on chelsea...................
sorry it has taken so long but nothing had changed until now, they put a PIC line in yesterday, very late last night or early this morning i had just lost all hope, i was by her bedside and just holding her hand and playing with her hair talking to her, i decided to try to just place her favorite toy in the palm of her hand even though she really cant manipulate it she plays with it every day so i placed it in her hand and all of a sudden out of nowhere she snatched that toy right out of my hand>>>>> total shock<<<<<<
she began to open her eyes and is making an effort to breathe over the vent consistently~~~sigh~~~ my baby was sending me a sign that she was still with me.
they discontinued her antibiotics and throughout today has been more and more alert (not completely with it ) but god sent me a sign to not lose hope for she is still with us and he also reminded me not to be so impatient.
daddy is up there with her now i had to leave i was in a constant state of panic, and was feeling like someone was standing on my chest i couldnt breathe and i couldnt quit shaking, so i figured if she is peeking up i had to leave (major mommy guilt).
the doctors are thinking she just needed extra time and her body needed the rest. so hopefully she continues to improve and we can get her off the vent soon.
i truly believe that all of the prayers and thoughts have helped tremendously so thank you all soooooooooo much, and i will continue to update.
many thanks u have all been there for me and chelsea and our family ty.
