Hi cloud, I don't know much about shingles (other than the fact they are painful) but am guessing the eye doc wants you to stop using those drops because they don't seem to be bringing you an relief...
I have alot of eye issues & I use a drop I buy @ Wal-Mart for about $9. They are called Refresh Liquigel. These are for dry eyes & they really help me with the redness.
Perhaps you could ask your doc or the pharmasist about these drops? Please don't use anything without consulting a professional-your eyesight is too important!
Good luck & take care,Buttons

Hi Clouds Z - are you still on antivirals? He may want to stop the antibiotic if he feels that your eye has healed. If the epithelium is intact there is less concern about a secondary infection.
You may want to use something to soothe the eye. Artificial tears is a good idea - without presevatives may be better. Ask you eye doc what he recommends, they usually have samples. I would not recommend OTC drops that "get the red out". Those are to be used short term only. If used for long term, they can cause rebound redness.
What you have is serious - check with your eye doc.

Hi there Clouds
I am sure I have my face shingles coming again today....around the eye.
Am going to the doc shortly about it - just wondering what medication I should get from him initially ...& should I ask to see a eye specialist as well.
Thanking you

Clouds Z - what drops did you stop?
Roga, here is a good overview article about shingles. http://www.aafp.org/afp/20000415/2437.html The best thing to do is to get on an antiviral immediately.
What did your doctor say?

Did the neomycin also contain a steroid? If there was a steroid, that may have kept your eye from being red. If you eye is redder when off the med, they you need to go back to your eye doc. Shingles in the eye needs careful followup.

I can't remember where I heard that certain antibiotics should not be used for prolonged periods in the eyes as it caused other problems. I think it may have been when my children were small, that I was told to stop the antibiotics after a certain period. Perhaps it was the medicine that was causing the redness and irritation after the initial problem resolved? Cheerio.
