REVEREND GRAHAM HOSPITALIZED

The 89 year old Evangelist, Reverend Billy Graham, underwent an elective procedure on Wednesday. Doctors updated the valve for a shunt which was implanted to regulate pressure in his brain. Asheville neurosurgeon, Ralph C. Loomis, MD, says "He was bright and alert and conscious immediately after surgery and called me by name." Reverend Graham has a condition that causes a buildup of fluid within the brain. It can cause symptoms similar to Parkinson's Disease. The Reverend is listed in fair condition at Mission. He is expected to remain in the hospital for a minimum of several days if there are no complications.

This was on our new cast tonight. His daughter said she had no idea he would need it replaced. I will come back when I calm down about how wrong they brod casted his condition. I'm wondering if I should write the news cast. They probably downplayed it to keep people from running up to the hospital. I just hope he doesn't have the same nsg that told me mine didn't work in 1983. AHHH!!!

The AP article was fairly good, explaining the shunt's function in nice detail -- link follows:

I suspect that's exactly what they did. I thought the same way when I read about Rosanne Cash's Chiari surgery some months ago. Really, though, apart from calling it "elective" (which it may have been in his case, considering his advanced age), I'm not particularly upset with this. It sounds accurate to me.

I am even more confused bacause of my own reasons...Loomis put my 1st shunt in, in 1983 then did several surgeries trying to fix it after it was clipped out in 2002. He never told me about hydro that I had. He was going to take my shunt out because he thought i did not need it told me i could hemoriage because it had been in so long and had 85% chance of dieing. My Dad then ask if someone else knew more about this and could do something else(5 min before surgery) He told us he was not sure but thought that a Dr. at Duke may be more familiar with shunts. This was just the beginning of my rollercoaster ride... Thanks for that artical though. I had the faulty shunt in for 10 or 12 months that Duke put in and tried to see Loomis again his nurse recognized me and did not ever let me see him. He is a sweet heart of a doctor when he came to the ER to see me one of my 1st visits in 2002 he took my face in his hands and kissed my forehead. I don't have ill feeling toward him I guess more of heart break. I have ill feelings toward ***es at Duke for letting me go so long with a bad shunt and doing so many reprograms on it. I know know that I had a mild stroke from so many so close together. He never edcuated us just acted like he knew everything and nothing was wrong with me. His words to me and my parents: "I would just have to learn to live with it." My parents lied to get me in with another nsg. Told that driving 4 hrs was getting too expensive and wanted a nsg closed to home. The next nsg in SC continued the same for 6 months then wanted to send me back to Duke. But on thaty visit I was crying walking out in destress thinking I was dieing and Duke would just rush it up for me I saw the diagnosis: Hydrocephalus. Then started researching that word to find my present nsg that has given me my life back. It has taken several years but I am able to live now. I'm sorry I got off on all this I just have personal issues I need to get past. I anger easily over things happening. I just thought maybe they would have learned from my issues. We did not sue for fear of another nsg refusing to ever see me again. I thought it all was just mistakes that were made. I don't know...I got to go think...:confused::confused:
