Folic acid has been known to aid in proper brain development for more than 15 years. :) Women of child-bearing age are given folic acid guidelines by their doctors for this reason, and prenatal vitamins are enriched with it. However, plenty of women take the recommended dosage before and during preg and still have kids with SB. This is probably due to a genetic predisposition they were unaware of, or improper absorption of the folic acid into the mother's bloodstream and placenta. Since Chiari is often thought to be a neural tube defect, too, there is some support for the idea that the same therapy is necessary to lower the risk of offspring developing it. I firmly believe my son's ACM is directly related to a host of serious health complications I experienced during the majority of my preg, including a GM seizure and an entire trimester of severe pneumonia.

Just my thoughts,

LIZARD :)
