Hi, I am 23 years old female. Is it true that if you experience pain in the lower area like where you have menstrual cramps, other than its not pain like menstrual cramping, that it can be a sign of ovulation? I heard that when an egg drops or is about to drop that some women get sharp like pains in there stomach. I am having those pains today but have only had them once and it didn’t last long at all but hurt. Is what I have heard true? Please response me.

If you've never experienced that type of pain before, it would be best to give your doctor a call....

You didn't give a lot of specifics in your post-- like what point are you at in your cycle or if you are experiencing any other symptoms, so it is kind of difficult to really be able to say.... Some women--- including me, can "feel" when they are ovulating. For me though, it is a little bit different than my PMS type cramps. The pain I get when I ovulate is a very deep pressure, achy, "hurt" in one side of my lower pelvis/back--directly over my ovary (which side hurts alternates from month to month because only one ovary releases an egg). It usually only lasts a few days.

There are many, many causes of pelvic pain though--- including cysts (I also have overian cyst and while normally they aren't really painful, it is a possibilty), infections, UTI/Bladder issues, etc; so it is really best to go see your doctor if this is your first time experiencing it.

Hang in there !

This type of pain is called a Mettleshmerz. I think that is the correct spelling after the German doctor that first described it. I was never aware of it until after I had my last baby and had my tubes tied.

However, In the USA, sexually active women, are expected to see their gynecologist annually, for a check up and Pap smear for cervical cancer. If you have not seen a doctor, I would agree with the recommendation by another person posting, that you make an appointment to be sure there is nothing other than an ovulation pain. Cheerio.
