View Full Version : Body temp problems
Hi all,
I have been on this forum before and got a lot of good information. I don't have a specific diagnosis. I just seem to have a lot of odd things happen in the last 2 years.
I am a 51 year old female. Suddenly, I am always hot. I don't mean with hot flashes, just that I am hot for a day or so at a time. I wipe the sweat from my forhead and am so uncomfortable that I feel overwhelmed! This is so strange since I have always been cold. I even moved to the desert years ago because I was only comfortable when it was over 90 degrees. It is so odd for me to b the only one hot and wanting to turn up the air.
I slammed into menopause about one year ago. Everything just stopped. I never had hot flashes. I don't think this is the problem because of the length of the "heat waves".
Anyone know of any reason I would suddenly be so hot all the time?
Thanks to any readers input. I know I could probably search this forum but it appears that mush is lost in a recent crash.

Are you actually running a fever or are you just feeling hot. Are you having any other symptoms?
Have you had your thyroid checked. An overactive thyroid can be a cause of feeling too hot. This site has a check off list for symptoms of hypo and hyper thyroidism.

i seem to have porphyria, and someone posted recently in one of the yahoo groups about having constant low-ish fever until she was dx'ed and treated (not that it's always an easy dx to get)
the first line of treatment is ... ta da: glucose! a profound increase in well-being upon taking sugar (hopefully, not even honey, certainly not fructose) would tell you a lot. email me if you need more.
best,
zo

I too have horrible time feeling way too hot.
My sweating is off the charts and has ruined my social life.
There goes the Ms America pagent title I was hoping for! Oh well!
Maybe I'd win the "Hot Mama" category?
I'm unable to wear make up...my hair is often dripping wet as if I'd stepped right out of a steamy hot shower and didn't dry off.
The drips of sweat actually drip down my face at a steady rate.
Its hard to wear my glasses because they fog up.
I must take a cool cloth and wipe my face down often.
I feel like a freak. Anything can set this off...it rarely happens during the night so you can't say its night sweats.
I cannot tolerate having my husband put his hand on me...it sets off a heat wave in me. Its really weird.
I also cannot tolerate the airconditioning blowing on me due to my Peripheral Neuropathy.
My muscles twitch up and down my legs and sometimes upper body.
I have a lot of muscle weakness, that's tied to B12 deficiency.
I think a lot of my metabolic issues are becaue of the sweating and I get mineral and vitamin deficient... aslo maybe because of problems with absorbtion due to the crohns disease.
I take hormones...so they don't think its that.
I have all sorts of health issues...and Hasho Motos, thyroid disease.
My body temp is always low...always 97* no matter how hot or cold it is.
I do OK in desert heat, but cannot stand any kind of moist heat.
I also have Crohns disease that is pretty bad...I've had 2 bowel resections and need another one because of either disease or scar tissue.
I also take Prednisone, but now only 10 mg...when I took higher doses I didn't have this sweating problem then.
The doctors just don't have any answere for me....I'm on my own on this issue. I think its tied to the neuropathy...(nerve endings) Who knows.
Please stay in touch...if you find some answeres please let me know.
Hope you find some help. Blessings, cheryl
Thanks for all the info. It may be hormonal. I got a tryroid test done a year ago and it came out normal but I guess I need a more exact type of test. Since a year has gone by, it is probably time for a new test. My body temp is always low and has always been for years. My mind thinks of terrible things like I have a brain tumer or cancer or some other disease and my boys will be left on their own. I have had so many odd things in the last two years and none seem to be related. I don't know of porphryna but I will look into it. I don't seem to have any one great problem. Not one Dr. seems to think anything is wrong with me. The body temp thing is new. Between odd rashes, tingeling arms, weight gain, lumps, and left arm pain, I feel like I'm falling apart. Sometimes I think I am better off to spend my money on a big life insurance policy then to see any more doctors!
Thanks all for your input. I will keep you all informed of my search for answers in case someone else has this issue!

Lori....low body temp is very indicative of Thyroid disease. Very common for anyone over 40.
I've had low body temps since my 20's...first time I'd taken my temps, was for infertitlity treatments....It took years for my Thyroid to go "limp".
I had thyroid panels checked for years....never came back showing a problem. Then one day....I was sleeping round the clock. Like I couldn't wake up. My thryoid had shut off completly....it was a dangerous condition. It took an Endocrinologist to sort it out. I have Hashi Motos....just like my mother, her sisters, her father, his sisters....on and on!
Does anyone in your family have thyroid problems?
I would ask to be seen by and Endo...I would demand it!
Sure can't hurt....may find the answeres you need.
I forgot to mention this...while I'm sweating profusely...my feet, hands and nose are ice cold. Its h3ll sometimes.
Be sure you take B12 too....its been a life savor for me.
Blessings, cheryl

Lori, when you get your thyroid tested again you may want to be sure they run a complete panel including an antibody test.
I went to a local thyroid symposium a week ago and one speaker (M.D.) mentioned Wilson's syndrome. This is when a person has all the symptoms of hypothroidism but the tests are negative. Here is a website http://www.wilsonsthyroidsyndrome.com/ There is even a link to physicians who treat Wilson's
A warning. The American Thyroid Association has found no scientific evidence supporting the existence of "Wilson's syndrome." http://www.thyroid.org/professionals/publications/statements/99_11_16_wilsons.html

Yes get that thyroid tested make sure you ask for the numbers not just a normal answer....A low or high normal could not be normal for you....It is typical to be suffering for some time before your thyroid tests out of whack according to the ranges set previously by the endocrine association....
The last thing I had heard was that the endocrine world was starting to see things a little differently and was contemplating changing the thyroid numbers to more accurately represent the larger variances....And do not let them only do one test make sure they do an entire Tpanel.....
Look up Mary Shomon, she has a web site that keeps up to date information and calls doctors to task over resistances in taking the thyroid and endocrine seriously. She believes many people are undertreated or completely ignored altogether.....
When my thyroid went I was so cold all of the time, but I often go through hot flashes that feel like fevers as well......I am 33 and am completely hypothyroid and diabetic which is something that can follow once your thyroid begins to go......Often times a person will go from euthroid(normal) to hyerthyroid(too much thyroid hormone) and then on to hypothyroid(no thyroid hormone) in a short period of time making you miserable and testing will come back normal, or normal in the medical ranges......
I believe I have had thyroid issues since I was a teenager and perhaps before that but no one would listen to me let alone test me....And now I am a 33 year old women who is on levothyroxine for life.....
Be active in your endocrine health as it is often underappreciated and completely overlooked! Your temperature is run by your endocrine system, if it is up and down often, or you often feel warmer or colder than everyone else then look closely at that.....If you have other symptoms that point to the endocrine look for a doctor who will take you seriously!
Best of luck,
Fay
Thank you all for the advice. I will do my research and get some new tests.:)

Lori,
Hot flashes do not always come with the cessation of your menstrual periods. My mother had no problems at all at that time but when she was 70, was feeling warm all the time. I think your feelings of warmth are related to menopause and a good physical and a sympathetic OB/GYN specialist might be willing to let you try a low dose estrogen to see if it helps. If it does, you know that was the problem. If taking estrogen causes you concern, there is not need to continue it if you don't want to. Cheerio.

As another posted suggested, make sure they do a COMPLETE panel.. including free t3 and free t4. I have found that a lot of doctors don't check those unless patient requests them. GL!

Cheryl,
Your symptoms sound so familiar. After delivered my Son last year Dec 05. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. However I keep sweating, and would have cold hands and feet, muscles twitching, tingling in my back, tinning eyebrows, high Cholesterol,Swelling in hands mostly right during exercise Heightened sensitivity to odors, noise, light, change in weather, and touch Heavy and painful menstrual periods Dizziness and heavy/drooping of eye lids, Dry skin, anxiety No weight loss with diet and exercise, Still thinking this must be because of FMS??? I didn't pursue. All my thyroid test came back normal, then I had a thyroid scan which showed enlargement, a biopsy was done and now it's Hashimoto Thyroid. I'm on Synthroid 50 mg, but I still have these sweating episodes, muscles twitching, and tingling in my back. I figured the FMS diagnosis is correct, 11 points on my body hurt, can't sleep, and TMJ, however could this be just a thyroid problem?? And the Dr. said I was just a little Hypo, but my symptoms go both ways, is that normal. I take vitamins, b-12, Omega 3, and Prosac for the anxiety and Insomnia. Do you have any other suggestions? Also did you get pregnant with fertility treatment? My husband and I want to have another child but concern for my health is it possible? Any information would be helpful thank you Cherie
