A while back, I was diagnosed with cysts in my ovaries. They weren't
cancerous and my GYN didn't seem to be worried about it, so I let it
go. Well, I just finished my cycle this month and I've got a constant,
nagging pain in my right side-which is the same side that the shunt is
on.

My question is: could cysts in the ovaries affect a VP shunt? I've
never had this before, so it's all new to me. I am going to talk to
my GYN, but I was wondering if I need to talk to my NS, too.

Thanks!

Gina,

Have your GYN and your nsg communicate with each other about this. This is not something I know about, but it seems that it wouldn't be much of a reach to think they could impact each other.

Please let us know. I think we're all curious and concerned.

LIZARD :)

I'll definitely have to make sure they talk to each other. I think the
reason I'm paying more attention to it is because of what happened
with the hydrocodone. I just don't want this to turn into another
situation where something's blocking/affecting the shunt.

Anatomically - I doubt it really (since they are cysts and not fibroids or the like) . . . but it would be worth a call. That is an awful pain and I am sorry you're having to deal with it.

Hugs,
Kathleen

I have had ovarian cysts. They pain steadily for a couple of days before they burst. After that the pain disappears. If the pain continues for more than a couple of days, get back to the doctor. Stacy.

I'll definitely be calling on Monday. The only reason I haven't done it
yet is because I'd rather talk to my regular doctor, not the doctor on
call. I have the feeling that this isn't something that's just going to
"go away" on its own.

I have a VP and had an LP for a while at the same time . I Had severe fibroid tumors and ovarian and uterine cysts along with endemeriosis. My Obgyn said in no way could they related to or affect either of my shunts. I had Uterine oblation surgery done for the problem and it worked so great. I am done in the baby department so what they did was carterize (lazer remove) the inside lining of the uterus. I have no more endrimetriosis,no more tumors, no more pain and best of all no more monthly cycle and all the stuff that goes along with the monthly cycle and I still have all the parts there. You have to be absolutly sure you are done having kids though. You cannot ever get pregnant if you have this surgery.

Well, I'm single and not looking, so I'm not worried about not having kids.
Besides, I'm taking a high dose of anti-convulsants, so there's no way I
could even think about getting pregnant.:)

I don't know if the doctor would consider laser removal, but I wish he
would!:(

ok, not that this is the time for stressed out erica to think about pregnancy, but i really really want to know something for the future. On the topic of women issues, does anyone know anyone who has had uterine prolapse surgery and been able to get pregnant and how that pregnancy went? I would hope that with spina bifida and having this prolapsed uterus correction surgery that i can get pregnant, but im not sure on how that works since i have less "tone" and control down there in terms of my cervix and everything else. anyone with any of these health issues have anything to offer?

You should see a high-risk OB and talk about all of this at your first appt, way in advance, if possible. We're all different, of course. I have a tipped uterus, hydro, and epilepsy, and have had 2 kids. No trouble getting preg; pregs were good re hydro issues, although I did have a grand mal seizure early-on with my son, and he was dx'ed with autism at 2 1/2 and Chiari Malformation at 5 1/2. My parents were in the middle of a bloody divorce then (after nearly 29 years of marriage :( ), and I don't doubt that figured in. Mom left 3 weeks after my sz. That was my first trimester, and my health was horrible through the preg after that, likely from all of the stress. :(

LIZARD, hopin' I helped somehow :)
