General Mills is now adding wheat to to more cereals - perhaps the only two left that did not contain gluten. Read the label carefully on Cocoa Puffs and Trix. The older, GF stuff, may be around for a while. Found this info on Clan Thompson's website http://www.clanthompson.com/res_news_alerts.php3 It's a good place to check out "alerts".

When Corn Pops added gluten a few years back there was a report in the newspaper of a woman who became very ill. She did not reread the label and continued eating her one bowl a day. In the article it said that it would take years for her to recover.

Is Fruty Pebbles still GF?

Although I don't eat any cereals, it is sad that GF choices are being taken away.

Thank you for this post Anne. I admit to buying some mainstream cereals for my 3 kids on occasion. Last week my daughter, who is being treated for anemia, was going downhill. She usually can be found on the couch when she is not at school or on the field hockey field. However, by Friday she was also telling me she was so tired she could barely get through school. Yesterday I was shopping and picked up a box of cocoa puffs and there in small writing was "contains wheat". It was not on all of the boxes though. When I got home I checked the opened box we have and it contained wheat. My daughter had eaten some for breakfast last week. I immediately marked the box and told her she could not have it. She said "maybe that is why I have been so tired this week". I feel badly that this happened but maybe she is seeing a "cause and effect" with the diet. Hopefully she will get a bit more energy this week once the gluten is out of her system.

Thanks again for the alert. I usually scan labels but sure missed this one.

Those "oops" that you don't know until AFTERWARDS but can relate back...become some of the most convincing evidence there is. I guess it is basically a 'blind' trial, with the benefit of KNOWING afterwards.

Oh Judy!!!! :( So sorry to hear she's not feeling well. It is hard to find things kids will eat in the morning when they're not really all that hungry, yet they won't get the chance to eat again until lunch. Ted will not eat a cereal/milk breakfast because the milk (even goat's milk) makes him feel sick. Yet the "American" eggs/homemade hash browns doesn't appeal to him either. So he eats homemade chicken/carrot/celery/lemon soup for breakfast. Every day. Then he doesn't feel sick. The breakfast of...champions?

We stopped eating all mainstream cereal a few years ago. We felt like we couldn't trust those companies to provide a true GF product. Even though the other stuff is more expensive, I am glad that I don't have to worry. We don't buy it unless it says Gluten Free right on the front of the box.

I hope your daughter is feeling better soon!

Oh Judy, that is so sad, and frustrating!

We have never purchased a box of mainstream cereal. I have always worried too much about cross contamination with those, and the EnviroKidz are a nice alternative for us. Bella and I eat the Koala Crisp with rice milk. Bean doesn't eat cereal at all.

We never eat it for breakfast.

For breakfast foods we eat things like GF pancakes, waffles, eggs and bacon, stuff like that.
It would would be beyond upsetting to trust a product as safe and then have it just up and changed in that manor. Very frustrating!

I'm glad you posted the updates here!

I was the pregnant woman on the floor of Giant pulling every box of Trix off the shelf and loading my cart with a dozen of the old formula!!! I just happened to be alone that day and reading labels. I haven't bothered with the Cocoa Puffs, after I bought all those boxes of Trix he was tired of them!

I was very sad, we had just started to venture out from the HFS brands.

I will say though my kids prefer the less sweet Crunch 'ems Corn and Rice than Cocoa Puffs or Trix. And if they are in a fix for something sweet, we put chocolate syrup on top of the chex like squares and then pour the milk over -- they like it. I wouldn't dare try it.

My little Celiac actually prefers fruit (catalope, strawberries, raspberries, or grapes) to cereal. And lately he really is enjoying Kinnickinick Donuts and Muffins, although I make chocolate "cup cakes" which he eats as muffins for breakfast. And he likes boiled eggs any time of day as well.

I just think we need to think outside the box of Cereal for breakfast as being healthy, I can't eat cereal for breakfast, it's too carb loaded and not enough protein. I can only eat it for a snack after a protein meal.

So he eats homemade chicken/carrot/celery/lemon soup for breakfast.

Karen

I remember from the old forum that you had mentioned soup for breakfast so I tried it last week. I had made myself a great chicken/vegetable soup. I found it filling and it satisfied me til lunch. I will do that again. :p

I guess the good thing was, as Cara pointed out, we sort of did a "blind trial". A couple of times in the past year my daughter accidentally had gluten and I pointed out afterwards how tired she was she did not see the cause and effect. This time she was the one who stated it first.

Unfortunately the envirokids cereals all have the "may contain peanuts" statement. My son is very allergic to peanuts.

I think soup will be my winter solution for my breakfast. My daughter eats breakfast around 6:45 which is when I am getting up. I will bake her some more muffins to have in the freezer this week.

I love a good thai curry for breakfast. (Lunch or dinner too!)
