hey all you foodies out there!
i was reading this column i get in my email everyday. it has a lot of tips on how to do things "greener" in your life, meaning doing things that benefit the earth.
i learned that those stickers that are on fruit (dontcha just hate em?) tell more than just what kind of fruit they are and how much they cost.
according to the folks at http://www.idealbite.com/ , a 4-digit number means the food was grown the conventional way (usually using pesticides for insect control). a 5-digit number beginning with the number "9" means the food was organically grown. a five-digit number beginning with the number "8" means the food is genetically modified (gm). genetically modified means a gene has been introduced into a food to make it supposedly somehow better.
being greener in your food choices means buying produce that is locally grown, to avoid the use of trucks and the gasoline and oil they use and our dependency on oil. buying organically grown food avoids the use of pesticides which end up in our water supply and in our bodies.
to a healthier life,
jeannie
