Hello, I apologise for repeating myself with this thread as I have already posted it on the chronic pain board but am just getting used to how to use this system and how huge the membership is. i thought i should write my story here and perhaps gain some support, advise etc.

Hello, my name is Shelley and heres my story. Im 38 years old and was working as a full time teacher with no medical conditions except for lower back pain and a tight muscle in my neck called a torticollis which i have had for twenty years.

Last year (April 2007) I went to the doctor with a painful blocked ear. After attempts to unblock the ear etc it then resulted in an electric shock type pain going across my teeth and to the other ear as my inner ear had become inflamed. This then resulted in my tongue and face tightening in response to the pain so the doc put me on baclofen. Prior to this my only health problems were a painful lower back and a torticollis, both of which Ive had for 20 years and managed through physiotherapy. I was living a normal healthy life, on no medication as a busy school teacher, living alone and was meant to be getting married this christmas gone.
When I first went on baclofen I took 10mg and then another 10mg. The next day the painful face melted away and so did my back pain and torticollis pain. However the day after my arms started to burn so I then reduced my dosage to 5mg. I stayed on the 5mg for about two weeks before I had to go and see my neuro. By then my pain in my ear had stopped and the inflammation had gone down.

My neuro told me there was no need to wean off the Baclofen and that i would be fine coming off the 5mg. I trusted him and just came off it.

Three days later i began violently retching with an extreme sensation of nausea. The retching was not gastro intestinal but from the sides of my body. My stomach was also very touch sensitive as was the rest of my body. For two weeks the medical proffession were baffled. I kept telling them that it was because of the Baclofen but they kept dismissing it. After two weeks of retching I was rushed to hospital where finally a doctor said that this was most definately Balofen withdrawal syndrome and that I was to go back on 5mg.

As soon as I went back on the Baclofen the retching stopped but my intestines opened and all my contents came flooding out.

I felt so ill but had stabalized none the less. the doctor then told me to wean off 1mg a week. Four days later i started doing this..well someone opened the doors of hell and threw me in and locked the door. i suffered horrendously with EXTREME NAUSEA. (you have to experience it to believe it.) I felt sick all over my body but it wasnt Gastro-intestinal. I could retch one minute then eat the next. My whole body became touch sensitive..if you touched me anywhere I would retch. i had wavy movements inside my body and crawling sensations inside and I thought the retching was going to kill me.

2 months later the weaning off process stopped and I had suffered so much withdrawal and thought it would be over and I would go back to normal as everyone kept telling me... I WAS WRONG.

Three days after coming off baclofen for the second time I began bleeding. I bled for 40 days. I had swinging sensations inside me like I was swinging on a hammock. In the end my parents couldnt cope and called an ambulance. I was rushed to hospital where they were very thorough and checked every part of me and then sent me home..At least nothing else was wrong!

My list of withdrawal symptoms which continued and to date are extreme nausea on one side of my torso which swaps sides sometimes
crawling sensations through my teeth, head and back like snakes crawling through my body.
a feeling of someone poking hot pins into my skin
a feeling of being car sick even though Im still
vertigo type symptoms
muscle spasms
violent and aggressive retching where I needed to be held down
burning sensations in my throat and ears
Problems with digestion
my whole body tingling
cold hands and feet
clenching jaw
a feeling of vibration and buzzing inside me
eyes twitching
body temperature change.
urine dsicolouration
nightmares
hallucinations
vivid dreams
a feeling like Im recovering from flu
sharp shooting nerve pains
a feeling of the wheel of a steam train rotating inside me
a feeling of being spaced out
muscle weakness on my right side compared to my left
thoughts of impending doom(I told everyone I only had a year left to live and started preparing for my funeral)
There is more than this but my current problems 5 months off the drug are

my muscles have not gone back to normal-My torticollis and lower back pain has not returned but I get other spasms instead ie like a rebound spacticity. (baclofen can cause you to have more aches and pains..its a bit deceptive in that it can also cause pain if you are in tolerance to the drug or withdrawal and so you take more)
urine discolouration
a feeling of inner rotation- like the wheel of a train is going round and round inside me
nausea on my right side of my torso but not as bad as it used to be
poor digestion like my intestines are asleep and dont want to work properly. (There are GABA receptors in the intestines too which is causing this)
my jaw is clenching.
voices in my head all night even though Im asleep
always feeling hungry even though Ive just eaten.

Symptoms change all the time and I can manage during the day on my own now after 5 months but it has been hard. My well being has improved BUT Im still suffereing. If anyone can relate to any of this list..be it small please get in touch and tell me what the symptom was, did you recover and how long did it take for the symptom to go away?

my neuro says im suffering from baclofen withdrawal syndrome and central nervous system malfunction but is only guessing that I will recover as she has no knowledge of others who suffered in this way.

My biggest question is- Will my back pain and torticollis pain return(Iwant it to) and my muscles and normal body return.
I went to the doc with one problem and I got at least 30 back in return

If anyone has any withdrawl symptoms from any drug can you please list them and describe how long it took for the withdrawl symptoms to go. Sometimes withdrawal symptoms can mimic other conditions so remember sometimes you can be misdiagnosed and be put on another drug to counteract the withdrawal symptom and thus it becomes a vicious circle and you never know if your symptom is a condition or just a withdrawl symptom.
Also you may not suffer from withdrawl of baclofen if ou are on another medication that also goes through the cns and may have only have had only a few symptoms so please list them anyway..

Any input gratefully recieved. God Bless

Shelley

Hi Shelly,

I have reduced my daily dose from 20mgs daily to 15mgs, so far so good. Has you doc considered giving you another anti-spasmotic to see if that helps. Something like Soma or robaxin? There are others, I can't seem to think of them off the top of my head. These meds may help. I think they are the reason I have not had any withdrawl. I have also reduced the amount of lyrica I take from 75mg 3-4x's a day, down to 50mg 3-4x's a day. I really don't have any other problems. I am so sorry I can't be of any help. I will ask my pm when I see him Friday if he has any suggestions I can pass on to you.

Take care,
Kathy

Hi thanks for that. yes i think you are right. because i wasnt on any other drugs that work through the cns and brain i went into withdrawals. i may consider taking other drugs. i am 7 months off now and there are improvements in well being. I dont have nausea like I used to and also dizziness etc has calmed down and in the evenings i dont have any symptoms at all so can be normal. i will wait til one year off the drug. my neuro wants me to wait because she says i will heal with time and also because of my intestinal issues since baclofen was reintroduces she wants to be careful. But if I get to the stage where i cant take any more of being house bouind then i will take something to give myself a better life. howvere i have spoken to people on other boards ie benzo boards and they say reinstatement can also cause problems as I could hit tolerance very quickly and have difficulties tapering again. ironically I dont have any need to take baclofen or a muscle relaxant other than withdrawal. i was only put on it cos i had a painful ear and a muscle spasm in my face as a result and now all this mess. i was only on it for 2 and a half weeks but the issue is I was cold turkeyed off. They tried reinstatement but they messed up again (the docs) and started withdrawing me again after 4 days rather than giving my brain the chance to settle. thats why im in this mess. Cos docs dont know enough about withdrawal. i know more than them now. Thanks so much for listening and caring. Shelley******xx

Has anyone mentioned the possibility that you may have Trigeminal Neuralgia? ( TN) There is a TN site here at Brain Talk. Sarah

They have ruled out trigeminal neuralgia. i have been thoroughly tested now. all my symptoms are related to baclofen. the receptors in my brain are letting go of the drug very slowly. My neurologist said that on rare occasions this can happen. i am 9 months off baclofen and the sedative part of the drug has finally left me and my sleep pattern has returened to normal. i am still symptomatic with withdrawal symptoms. My muscle tone has not returned to normal and neither has my menstrual cycle as a result. i had a horrifc withdrawal where my brain just would not let go of the baclofen effect. It is now but it will take another 9 months for complete recovery. i am doing alot better now. All the chemical imbalance has gone and I only have physical symptoms so am no longer house bound and can go out and am back to normal in that respect. Just some physical symptoms remain but the fact that my well being is solwly improving means that my receptors are slowly letting go of the drug.

praise the lord I found you...I hope you read this. ive been following your story for sometime. I even have a copy of one of your threads I cary with me to show any doctor(who may beleive me)
So I will pray tonight that you read this(or anyone else)
Heres my story. i was on methadone for 10 years(from 18 -28) long story why. i came off quickly in the hospital and suffered horribley for a year in pain from the damage it did to my body. this past summer , my meth dr, put me on baclofen for my legs. he began me on 20 mgs to be taken at night. it helped a bit , but mostly relaxed me. So I asked to be increased to 20 more during the day. So for a couple of months I was on 20 than 40 mgs. One day the pharmacy changed my pill dosage from 10mgs to 20mgs. i did not know this and was taking 80 mgs for a week. One night i forgot i had taken my dose and took extra and had an overdose. So i quit cold turkey(not knowing at the time that this was dangerous to say the least. after about 4 days , i felt so strange, i went to my parents house and eventually collaplsed on the ground, body shaking hallucinating etc. 2 more nights in the ER, they suggested it was baclofen withdrawal. so i was put back on my clonazpam 2mgs twice daily(now i take it 3 times) this took away a majority of the symptoms(especially the hallucinations)
6 weeks later , i was still suffering withdrawals and chose to go back on it. i began at 20mgs(i dont have a regular dr yet so i told my methadone dr to do this..he knows nothing about the drug) well last week, i ended up in the ER with a pancreacitis due to drinking(drank to help the symptoms which i had also done after the horroble pain after comming off methadone for a year...it caught up with me). I told the doctors at the hospital about the baclofen and they were doing everything to help. they dont have a pain clinic there(im reffered but it may take months) but they are having me see an anethedist and psychiatrist as i am having a lot of physical pain assciated with the withdrwals.(i was also moved up to 30 mgs as it is closer to my old dose) and i have experienced the pins and needles, burning skin due to baclofen, but now that im not taking as much its not so bad(except both are also w/d symptoms..confusing)
so my symptoms now are as follows, extream panic and anxiety, feeling sick especially at night or when sleeping. Confusion, seeing trasors at night(now that i dont sleep during the day, i dont have as much confusion.Lack of proper sleep, abdominal pain, mild spasms or tremors at night. a feeling of wanting to jump out of my skin(a lot like opiate withdrwal) sweats, chills, feeling very uncompfortable..and PAIN (which is confusing because it feels like the pain i had after the methadone, but im back on it until i can get a pain doctor) the pain is horrific in my back. Soar legs, joints etc.and more Now if you look at w/d symptoms from benzodiazapines, they are almost identical(and i read that the joint pain and back pain is normal)
So i am awaiting seeing a regular doctor(i live in canada and it is hard to get a gp)
My main question is, Shelly(if you read this or anyone else) you had mentioned that baclofen may cause pain, and that you may have to increase youre dose especially if youre in withdrawal. is this correct?
So far the reintroduction to the baclofen has yet to help.(maybe it has somewhat, but i dont think so) and its been 2 weeks. Now i am not prepared to come off and suffer again...yet. This drug never even helped me. I went through a year of hell comming off methadone(and it made my life hell while on it) im not prepared to sacrafice another year. i have a 7 year old daughter, who has lost enough.
So, for one, can anyone else tell me about their w/d experiences. or shelly , if you read this, you had mentioned that you had had so many, did any of these occur. Could you tell me a bit. i am so greatful to have my clonazapam and im in shock that they did not give hat to you shelly. You would have had not nearly half the problems you have had. Perhaps there was a reason. I hope i dont have to suffer months trying to convince doctors about the baclofen.
Anyways, if anyone can help, can you let me know. im so afraid. I just want my life back. Thanx to all.

Ok try not to worry. First of all withdrawal symptoms are not life threatening just very very disabling. Reintroduction of a drug such as baclofen needs to be done slowly and gradually increased until all the symptoms stop. however as you were on such a high dosage ie 80mg i do not advise it and remember i am not a doctor but know alot about withdrawal the effects and the healing time for some people. I am also familiar with symptoms and what they mean..

At 17 months off the drug i am now working full time as a teacher. Its been a hard journey. I still have dry mouth muscle stiffness, Gastro intestinal upset, some nausea although much milder than the early days and some menstrual irregularity, I also have some problems with feeling all emotions ie dumbed down but recently there have been some signs of improvement. This will always be the worst time of my life.

It sounds like you body has become tolerant to the drug on 30 mg and would require HIGHER DOSAGE TO STOP YOUR WITHDRAWALS.

This would not be possible in your case. i would advise you to stay on the 30mg of baclofen for another two weeks and then begin a very slow withdrawal using liquid baclofen at 10 percent cuts of the dosage you are on every two weeks. Do not come off it abruptly or too quickly as this could make you feel worse. The withdrawal process and the improvement could take some time for you to heal but you will eventually get there. if you are on other drugs I would advise you to stay on them as withdrawing another drug from the central nervous system will also make you worse.

It sounds like you suffered less than me. i was worse when i came off. the nausea can really be awful and it feels like a total body nausea and travel sickness type nausea. Im not surprised that the other drug didnt work to cover all your withdrawals as it works on different receptors in the brain. So this has simply started another dependency which i was not prepared to do as i was so scared. The good news is that very slowly and gradually over time your brain will reset itself back to normal but it will take time. the hallucinations will go pretty quickly and the nausea will eventually calm down. The spasms can be horrid and extremely painful and mimic ms. I found sitting in the bath a relief from symptoms. there is so much more I could add but i think you need to ask me more specific questions and I will be here to help in any way i can. BUT do not withdraw from the baclofen at the moment-its too soon to do this!

Avoid alcohol like the plague, no caffeine or any stimulants as they will make your symptoms worse hon!
Do not keep taking one drug to cover another if you can help it otherwise you are simply swapping one dependency for another. also you must avoid anti biotics as this will also make your symptoms far worse! baclofen withdrawal is very similar to benzo withdrawal. gradually over time your symptoms will fade but you will have to do a slow taper. the only way to stop the withdrawals is to stay on the drug on a high dosgae but for how long? and sometimes reinstatement can cause problems too as well as increasing the dosage. Some people who have increased their dosages on benzos have fared worse! I would advise you through gritted teeth to taper the baclofen and then allow the natural course of healing to take place. It does get better but very slowly for some. Everyone is an individual and you may recover before me. But please remember my advise is simply from my own experience and through other anecdotal information. Doctors and G.Ps im afraid no very little about withdrawal and the best course of action.

Im here for you.x
