after shutting down the computer,
spread out a piece of newspaper, turn the keyboard upside down, and shake it. if lots of little pieces of crud shake out, this will probably solve the problem. in my experience, most keyboard and mouse problems are caused by cat hair. new ones should not have cat hair but may have packing junk in them.
there are settings in windows for how hard you have to hit the keys before the computer pays attention.
or you could take it back and try another one, which is what i would do since i am real nervous about resetting anything.
