I took hydrocone years ago for 5 years consectively and I never had any sort of severe allergic reaction to it; however, this past year I took a half of one and i had a rash on the bottom portion of my face, neck and rt. shoulder. Is this an allergic reaction or part of the narcotics affects? I wish I knew whether or not to try this medication again. Any help into it is greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't think that the med would be the cause of the rash but it is possible your body has changed and is now allergic to it. I would be careful about using it again and would definitely let your doctor know about this before starting again.

Fish,
It might also be that the fillers and dyes and things are different in this version.
Are you taking a generic or a branded?? If it's a generic, you might ask your doctor AND your pharmacist to take a look at the ingredients and also take a look at a different brand.
People seem to forget that pharmacists are a wonderful resource when you're having a problem with your meds. They've gone to school for this  They actually know more than doctors do about drug interactions and allergic reactions.
If you've been going to the same pharmacy, they might also have a record of what brand you took back-when. If they or the doctor have this info, it might make it easier to track down what the problem is.
From my understanding of developing allergies, you have to take a drug twice -- once to sensitize your body and the second time to develop the reaction. BUT, there's no time limit on developing a reaction.
Good luck.

PS: One more thing: if you're taking a different combination of drugs now than you were five years ago, maybe it's the combination that's the problem. I know when I took that drug after I had my gall bladder removed, it resolved the pain beautifully, but it caused me such itching I wanted to rip my skin off and throw it into the washing machine http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v90/moose53/MINIS/ACTIVITIES/laundry.gif

I used to be able to take codeine...UNTIL I started Coumadin..then became allergic to it...rash etc, especially on my palms.
It's possible it's an allergic reaction and as the others have mentioned it may be due to different brand/fillers etc. (altho my docs NEVER believe that!).
I'd be very careful about taking it again and plz. check with your pharmacist before doing so...and have some Benadryl around.

Fish,
It could be an allergic reaction but I would suggest talking to your doctor or phamacist. Like the other posters said it could be another med that's conflicting with the hydroodone.
BTW, I love your screen name!! My oldest son is crazy about bass fishing and has been very good at it for a little over 10 years now which is saying alot since he's only 19 years old. I don't know where you live, but we're in Florida and there's lots of great lakes here.

Thanks much for the advice. I talked to the pharmacist and she said that the rash is an allergic reaction to whatever I took. Also said codeine is the derivitive of hydrocodone. So I'll stay with that conclusion as the culprit because I wasn't taking any other meds. at the time. I'm wondering if it's more than just codeine because I remember that when I took a couple recreational puffs on a Jay years after my surgery I had a big cherry mark on my neck. I may be allergic to all narcotics.
Lisa, I'm in NC. We've got a pond, but there's great fishin spots and lakes that run through the NC and SC into Georgia, but I envy yalls bass fishin, lil inlets all over the place. Take care.
