I had an appointment with my metabolic doc today and it went pretty well. We had a pretty long visit and talked about the decline I've had in recent months. The only thing is that I am kind of freaked out about this heart stuff again. I have been having trouble that we think is autonomic dysfunction (tachycardia, labile BPs, unexplained brief fevers, etc). I also have been having increased shortness of breath as well as a lot of fluid retention that comes and goes. The shortness of breath is not the textbook, classic congestive heart failure kind that is worse when laying down and better when you sit up... but it is definitely there, and my mom even noticed it and says I even do it when I sleep. The fluid retention is just downright freaky, and can be a congestive heart failure thing, too (though many other things can cause it). I get it so bad that it is what's called "pitting" edema... where you push on it and it leaves a dent where your finger was. I get noticeably puffy when I retain water, and the scale reflects it, too. It is getting worse, though... a couple of weeks ago, I put on 12 pounds of water weight in about 2 days, then lost those 12 pounds again over the next 4 days.

Anyway, my metabolic doc is worried that my mito is affecting my heart more these days, and wants me to go to the cardiologist. You can get a cardiomyopathy (heart muscle disease) from mito, and I actually just recently had an online friend with mito die from congestive heart failure that came on pretty quickly. He said that my cardiologist should be able to figure out if the tachycardia, labile BPs, etc is autonomic or if there's something else going on, like an arrhythmia. He wants me to get a new echocardiogram, an EKG, and do a Holter monitor. I don't know... it's just scary. At least we might be able to do something about the autonomic stuff, though, if the cardiology guy will prescribe me a beta-blocker.

I have an appointment with my primary care doc tomorrow, so I will also talk to him about this stuff and see what his thoughts are on the autonomic stuff, etc. I may be able to get the EKG out of the way in his office, too, which would be nice.

I have had minor funky stuff wrong with my heart for a while now (abnormal EKG, an unexplained pericardial effusion, tachycardia, etc). But it seemed, from today's appointment, that he was really thinking something has gotten worse with the heart stuff. Most of the stuff that's wrong with me is disabling, exhausting, etc... but not life-threatening. If I am developing heart failure, that could be life-threatening. So I'm scared is all. Thanks for letting me vent.

Kira,

It's good to hear from you, but I'm sorry that things are so scary right now. I would be scared too.

Since you have another appointment today with you PCP, hopefully they will do the EKG for you and then you can move onto the cardiologist.

I don't know alot about fluid retention but it sounds like you gain alot of weight in water and then drop alot more. I know that must be scary.

Hang in there and let us know what the doctors collectively decide.

How have you been emotionally with quitting work and school?

Kira,

I am sorry to hear this too. :( And I don't blame you for being scared. I am with Lisa, let us know what the docs decide on.

Kira, it is good to see you posting. I was thinking about putting out a call to you but saw you posting the last couple of days. One thing about going to the doctors is they can order up test that seem worrisome and with your condition it is no wonder you are feeling scared. The weight loss and other symptoms you are having certainly sound as if you should be seeing a cardiologist. I hope you get good news finding out it is an easy condition to treat or that it is something other than your heart causing your symptoms.

It is good you see your primary doctor tomorrow to bounce some things off of him and to get the EKG done. Any idea when the cardio appointment will be, I hope you don't have to wait too long. I wish you the best Kira and hope you keep us up to date about what is going on to cause your symptoms.

Thanks, guys. I had a pretty productive visit with my PCP today, actually, because my blood pressure, pulse, and temp were going all crazy right there in the room. When they checked me in, my BP was 100/68 and my heart rate was 126. Then, he had me get up on the table so he could listen to my heart and lungs, and when I was sitting on the edge of the table it was still fast (like 110-120). Then I laid down and he listened some more and said that it went down to 88 while I was laying down. After the exam, I got up and sat in the chair and talked to him a bit, and then we rechecked my pulse and it was back up to 120s. We DID get the EKG done today, and it's pretty much unchanged from previous ones (non-specific repolarization abnormalities). But at least they were able to do the referral and then actually call and set up a cardiology appointment for me. I bet I would have waited months to get an appointment if I'd tried to make it on my own, but at least my PCP's nurse was able to get me in for Jan 24th.

Kira, it is good your primary's nurse could get you into the cardio so quick. You sure have something going on as quickly as your heart rate changes. I hope the cardio can find what is going on and come up with an easy treatment for you.
