my son hit a deer also on vacation several years ago, using our car. Two deer jumped out at the crest of a hill, and he braked/swerved and only hit the second one.

It was not considered a "collision" so we did not use our $500 deductible.

It was considered "comprehensive" since another car was not involved.
Our comprehensive is only $100 deductible so it didn't cost much to fix.
(it was over $1700 total)

I hope you have comprehensive in your policy. Many people don't.

Did your airbags go off? Ours did not either.

Accidents involving deer are becoming very common. The EMS driver at our vacation home hit a deer going in both directions to a call one night! He hit one on the way to the hospital and on the way back! That EMS truck averages 9 hits a calendar year.

Wow, I'm glad you're alright, Quahog! Of course, you may feel worse tomorrow.

It was a nine point 220 lb buck that caused my spiney saga. He came in thru my windshield and sat in the front seat with me, but couldn't get his big ole rack thru. Lucky for me! He broke my seat and kicked me a couple times getting back out. Peeled back the roof a bit and pushed the rest of the roof down on my head. Kicked out the back windshield... It just went on and on!

They can kill you alright. I ate him. He was good. lol.

Take care and feel better!

Glenn glad to hear you and your gf are all right because there is no way to avoid them and it is even more danger to try and avoid them. We have those accidents all the time here since most of the county is forested. At least by using the venison you can save most of the $500 deduction by substituting venison for other meat for a while. I have seen deer wrecks with the whistles stuck on the bumper so I don't know how effective it is.

Glad you are both ok.
I would have taken the deer, too.
I always get a lil shaky around fields at night, between Moose and Deer.
anyway, glad your ok but have the neck checked just for the records,

Wow Glenn,

I am also glad you are both okay. I was hit by a deer a few years ago and I say "I" was hit because it wasn't a front end collision! He came at me from the side and there was no way I even saw it coming. Plus, that part of the road I was on at that point in time was a steep hill, hairpin curve and woods right up to the edge and I was driving slow. So, nope...all I remember was a head slamming into my driver's side window! And I had a NEON at the time...so you can imagine the damage!

But two guys stopped after I got out of my car (I was crying my eyes out) because that thing had hit, flipped somehow over my car and put huge dents everywhere...even on the trunk. Anyway, the two guys stood with me until the cop got there. The deer was still alive though and the cop said to just go on home and he would be over in a few minutes.

I drove home just crying and in shock. When the cop got there all I could think about was that deer. I just wanted to know if it was okay. And it was probably stupid of me because my car was a mess. But the cop said it had got to its feet and ran off into the woods. I still wonder about that...I wonder if he was just saying that to make me feel better. Anyway, he was kind of teasing me out of it and said it was rutting season so it was probably being chased and just jumped out at my car. So, I never did get to eat him and not sure if I would have anyway. I was just so sick about the whole thing. Geesh, I have always lived in a very wooded area and not once have I hit one...but I have SEEN a ton of them...uusally in time though. Anyway, my car was fixed, had to pay the deductible of course.

I am not sure about the deer whistles either. A friend of mine has them on her SUV and she swears by them. But as Mark said, I am not so sure they are effective only because the cop said he had them too but he had still hit plenty of deer.

I can imagine how your neck must feel! Ouch!

And Cervie Barb, I can't help it...I am laughing at your directness..."I ate him and he was good!" LOL

What I want to ask and this is silly. But is it really safe to eat them? I am just asking because honestly I don't know.

Cervie that reminds me of the 911 recording of a guy that 'killed' a deer and had it in the back seat when he awoke and started attacking the man. The 911 call was hilarious and you could just picture the action the guy described. He still had the deer tearing up his car while he was out of the car and in the phone booth making the call. It was a great laugh.

Sorry Glenn but I just could help but think of the 911 call when Cervie talked about the deer in the car with her. I hope you and your gf are feeling better today not having any soreness today.

Glenn,

Sorry to hear about the accident, but luckily you weren't hurt.

Best wishes,

Glenn,

First I want to say how happy I am that no one was injured. I would suggest that you get checked out anyway because alot of times it takes a couple of days before you start having pain after an accident.

Also when you call your insurance company they might very well cover it under your comprehensive coverage. The bad news is that most insurance companies have the same deductible for comp and collision.

I love to eat deer so I guess that's the one good thing that came out of the accident.

Take care and please go to the doctor and get checked out.

Glenn,

So glad no one was hurt during your accident.....I too hit a deer a few years back...Unfortunately, I panicked and swerved to miss the deer, but hit it anyway...I did end up doing a 360 to avoid hitting him....Thank God I did not hit anyone on the other side of the road...I somehow ended up driving in the right direction...The deer dented my hood and broke the grill on the front of the car, but other than that there was no other damage...My husband told me I should have just hit him head on, but my insurance agent told me I should not have done that because the deer could have ended up inside the car...He said people have been killed from the antlers...so I guess maybe I did the right thing...

I have never heard of deers getting inside people's cars when they get hit before - wow!

CervieBarb - the way you told your story is funny! I'm sure it wasn't to you at the time - but it paints a very vivid image of this deer sitting in the front seat with you.

It is funny to look back on. The locals call me "Tommy Boy". I don't know if anyone has seen the movie... I'm kind of an urban legend around here. lol. The poor old man driving behind me had to watch the whole ordeal, and when he stopped to ask how I was he looked like he was going to have a heart attack. I was more concerned for him at the time!

How are you feeling today, Quahog?

I was in a car that hit a deer when I was 15. I felt so bad for it. We were in the middle of nowhere on the coast highway. We put the deer in the back of the station wagon and stopped at a fire station in a little town. The fire captain told us to take it to this local man and he'd prepare it for us. That was my first venison.

By the way, your deer in the front seat was hilarious Barb!

I was also hit by a deer a few years ago.
The head in my windshield, the body wrapped around the side of the car.
Scared the *&*# out of me.
Ended up with whiplash. That didn't show up until the next day!

The insurance adjusted told me on the phone "don't wash the car we need to
see the blood"
I said "there is no blood, but will hoofprints on the door do?"

The car was a Geo Metro (small car) so needed lots of work. I cannot
remember what my deductable was.

Surprisingly the deer got up a few minutes later and ran off.
Bet he had whiplash too!!!

I hope you are ok Quahog.

wow, you are so lucky to be okay - I've lost people that way. Celebrate! I think I read there is something newer than the whistle, which doesn't always work - but you'll have to do some searching on the web because I don't remember a thing, sorry.
