I saw the PM last week and we doubled my Opana ER dose. Since then I am having problems with nausea, a few hours after taking it. I just called the PM and asked for phenerghan or something similar for the nausea.
I am not sure that this stuff is even working that well. It helps some, but not enough at this point. I don't want to play around trying different medications so I am hoping that the phenerghan will help enough with the nausea that I can continue to take it and maybe get some relief.:confused:

well the side effects are what you said , but if the Phegren doesnt work looks like you might have to try something else. Sometimes it takes a few meds to see if the right one is out there for you . I have tried for pain
Neurontin , Topamax, Cymbalta, Lyrica , Ameritripline , Methadone, Opana . and now Tramadol 400 mg per day . And have no side effects . Yu will find the right one for you.Is your Opana the ER ?

Opana side effects
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
shallow breathing, slow heartbeat;

seizure (convulsions);

cold, clammy skin;

confusion;

severe weakness or dizziness; or

feeling light-headed, fainting.

Less serious side effects are more likely to occur, such as:

nausea, vomiting, constipation;

dizziness, headache;

dry mouth;

sweating; or

itching.

Sandi, sorry to hear you are not getting the pain relief and are suffering nausea with this med. I know you want this to work because you don't want to get on the pain med merry-go-round. I hope you don't have to switch pain meds to find one that works the best for you.

Good luck with the Phegren, I hope it controls the nausea. It just stinks when we have to take another med to tolerate the pain med we are taking to control our pain. Hopefully the Phegren does the job and you start to feel better.

Thanks Rozia,
I got the phenerghan and will see how it helps or not tonight. Hopefully, it will ease off the nausea and we will go with that. I'd like to stick with one medication but if this is what it takes to make it so that it doesn't upset my stomach so much, it is what it is.
I was on dilaudid immediately post op after my first and second surgeries. Then I went on Oxycontin, and did pretty well with that for some time until about 4 months before my second surgery, and it seemed to stop being quite as good as managing my pain levels. We increased the Oxycontin twice over the course of about 6 months and it really wasn't doing much of anything. I am one of those that if it doesn't work, I see no point in continuing to raise the dosage and having it not be effective. Once we got the 40 mg tid and it still wasn't doing much of anything (at 150 mg total a day including the 30 mg for breakthrough), after talking to my PM, we decided to try methadone, which made me inordinately sleepy and confuddled in my thinking abilities. I don't like being fuzzy headed and we went off that and back to the Oxycontin, hoping that it would be more effective. Then we decided to try Opana. I took myself off the Oxycontin all together, waited a few weeks to see what my actual pain levels were and if a prn med would be feasable, and found that I need the steady dosing, prn weren't going to work as I'd hoped....So, now I'm on the Opana and we are still in the adjustment/titrating part of it.....I was doing okay with little nausea but since we went to 40 mg I have been nauseated an hour or so after taking it for the next 4-5 hours, then it subsides a bit.....so we are trying to manage the nausea. If this doesn't work, we will try something else.....
The pain relief is not the greatest yet, but I'm not sure if it is because we haven't reached an adequate dosage level or because it's just not going to work for me. If I don't get better relief over the next few days, I may see what ideas the PM has.
I am hoping that it works.......I really dislike the trying meds and switching them around.....
On top of that, my shoulder is giving me problems again.....and that's not a good thing. I had RSD , pretty severely for several years in it and I'm seeing signs of it again...I don't want to have to deal with that again.

Thanks Mark. I hope that I don't have to get on the pain med rollercoaster......I have tried to avoid that at all costs, and probably give the meds more time to see if they would work than I would ordinarily just to avoid having to get on that coaster......
Phenerghan is pretty good at controlling nausea. My children's pediatrician's have given it to them when they have had a stomache virus and they are vomiting uncontrollably, after we've tried all of the over the counter stuff....it works pretty well , so I am hoping for the same relief.
I'll let you know how it turns out.
