First off they sent it to my old address so it took a couple extra days to get to me. When they have my correct address in their system. Grr. I already called and left a message for the caseworker to set up the appointment but hasn't called back yet. Anyhoo, here is what the letter said in a nutshell:

We are writing to let you know that you may be able to recieve Social Security benefits. You must apply for these benefits by January 11, 2008. If you do not take action by this date: You will not be eligible for SSI & you will have to pay back any SSI you may have recieved December 2007 (yipes!). We will send you another letter that explains our decision..what to do if you think their wrong yadayadayada. If you want to recieve SSI payments you must apply for any benefits you can get now. In some cases, you can get a lower benefit if you apply now but a higher benefit if you apply later. You have to take whatever benefit you are eligible for now in order to recieve SSI.

I understand the deadline and all that. Is this a CDR? On the top it says Retirement, Survivors and Disability Insurance. I wasn't eligible for SSDI when I first applied, so is there a possiblity I could be now? What excatly am I applying for? ^_^;;

Sounds like they want to make a formal decision about whether or not you have enough credits for Social Security benefits. I don't know your history, but maybe they didn't know about your 2006 or 2007 wages when you filed your SSI claim and now it appears that you might have enough. I do know that SSA has missed potential Social Security entitlement in the past for SSI recipients and maybe they just want to cross all the t's and dot all the i's to make sure that your entitlement is not missed.

Make an appointment to see someone in your local office. Bring the letter.

I didn't work in 2006 and in 2007 I only earned like $75 before I had to stop working again due to doctor orders. I used to work full time before I got ill. I'll keep calling the caseworker today and if he doesn't call back later today I'll see if I can get a ride over to the local office and see if I can make a appointment that way.
