My brother has been dealing with drug and alcohol addiction since way before his accident. We are fighting really hard to get him back into rehab for his brain. But he still has a nasty addiction to drugs and alcohol and we know that it is so much deadlier to him now than ever. My mother is disabled and my dad has to work to support a family of three disabled people so there really can't be someone to watch him 24/7 and there are times that he drinks, smokes and we don't know what else. Do you think he could benefit from drug rehab now or should we wait?

Dear Amanda,

Loveland is a lovely place! I grew up in Ft. Collins and used to bike the canyon.

Yes, the combination of TBI and addiction is a brutal one. But the longer he goes without addressing the addiction the less his chances of recovery are, in my experience of working with folks in similar situations. I suggest you contact someplace like Craig Hospital in Denver and ask them if there are any combined programs he could qualify for.

Blessings,
Patrick
