....to say hi, and nice to meet you all here.
My name is Anne, I have been a member here before, but it's been a few years ago now.
I am mom to 6 kids, my youngest son Aaron, age 10 has PDD-NOS, mild/moderate Autism.

Maybe one or two of you remember us from before...Aaron, at age 7, was able to dis-arm the DARE officer that came to vsit in his PIP class.

I used to work at an elem. school as a 1:1 aide for a boy with autism, the same age as my son Aaron...now, I do respite care for my friend, the boys' mom, and his two sibs, also 2 boys with autism. All 3 are non-verbal, yet they are such a joy to be with!! Talk about smart too! I always say, "Not NOBODY can tell me they don't know."

Anyway...hi, and I feel good to be back.

Peace,

Kristen (ColeysMom)

Welcome back! I dont know if I ever met you-- my sweetie with Autism/PDD-NOS is also named Aaron :D He's 4.5 and currently non-verbal as well *starting to echo-- its awesome* but oh yeah-- he dun got a mind of his own-- SO SMART!

I think thats HYSTERICAL that your boy disarmed the DARE officer!!! I bet the guy was just dumbfounded! (Please share the story sometime-- I'd love to hear it!)

Anyway, welcome back!!

hey ! me 2 ! how did he do that ?
welcome back ! i don't remember you but also i don't remember what i ate for breakfast this morning.... ;) :)
belatedly I realized that non-verbal autistic doesn't mean they don't understand and if given the chance they communicate in their own particular way.

Hi Anna - I remember the officer incident that was scary but funny, we were all wondering how much fun 'barney fife' got made of back at the station.
Anyway... is he still in school?

Welcome! I don't remember you.:o While I've been posting here for almost 4 years, I've been primarily over on Child Neuro and have only recently been posting here.

So... where are the details on the DARE officer?

I think this is the most amazing story I've ever heard. As if the DARE program wasn't already a joke.

...be a fly on the wall when the DARE officer was chewed out! Alas, I have no idea what sort of reprimand she got. We'd had a BIG meeting, and I made my complaints...
Funny but scary yes....I got a phone call about 5 mins. after Aaron had come home from school...the teacher was sounding very upset and nervous...she tried to begin to explain to me what was up, then passed the phone to the Chief of Police...ANYWAY, it seems that the DARE lady was in the room, PIP or whatever ya' wanna call it classroom, was 'schootched' (SP? LOL) down to get eye to eye with another student..Aaron, who is on the net swing, his aide right next to him, took a leap out on a forward swing, and SOMEHOW...(to this day we aren't sure how) got the gun out of the holster, (which does have some sort of strap that holds the gun,) and began to walk away with it. The officer DID manage to get the gun back almost immediately , but fer CRYIN' out LOUD!!!

The thing that REALLY blew my mind was, this happened at the beginning of the day, and I drove him to school, and was STILL in the building!! And they KNEW I WAS THERE!! Burns me up...still! :o

The teacher at that time, would be leaving at the end of that year...*snork* think it coulda' been MY kid that pushed her out the door?? He also escaped from her, and the rest of the classroom, got OUT of the building, got INTO a car parked in the lot, and proceeded to lock the doors, and crawl all the way into the very back of the car...it had a hatch-back....THEY KNEW HE WAS A RUNNER. Any-whoo....he did finish up that year there, and one more, with a new teacher. He had blossomed under the new teacher, and is now in his home school again, ( now into his 2nd year there )with almost total inclusion. He's doing fantastic!! He has his moments, but don't we all? I tell ya, the school tried so hard to not let him back, I fought like he|| to get him back!! Glad to say, I can tell them, "nyaa nyaa" . They ARE very good to him, and he is happy.....he just wishes he could have one hundred days off for snow. He is at grade level (5th) in his spelling words, his science and social studies, although there are modifications and considerations made for him. I am so very proud of my son!!:D

(an aside: Don't they have a ZERO tolerance law? Why did this officer have to be armed? Other DARE officers aren't...I know, I've been through the DARE program with 4 of my 6 kids now. Ahh well...live and learn what our kids are capable of!)

I AM glad to be back here. Such friendly and helpful folks.:D :D

THANKS for the welcome!
